Innes had obtained a divorce for Mrs. Dennis In Carson City after jn rear of unhappy married life. He then, It is said, had promised to marry her. ' lie arranged to meet her In San An tonio and make certain Investments for her. The divorced young woman left Atlanta, t iking 116,000 with her. l,ater ,\bhh Nelms followed. The two sisters dropped out of sight completely, causing anxiety to their widowed mother in Atlanta. Then the latter received a letter dated at Han I'ran cisco and apparently signed by the elder sister, which read: i killed Beatrice In New Orleans and have come here to kill Marshall.” Ended in Cement Cauldron. The mother Informed the Atlanta police, who warned Marshall Nelms In Hun Francisco, lb* protected himself, believing the missive genuine. Weeks later, after many stray clues had been followed by the police of several cities, Nelms concluded that the letter had been mailed to misdirect any search made for the missing girl. lie came to Sun Antonio and found that the trail of the sisters merged with that of In nes and his wife seemed .to end In a huge cement cauldron In the yard of a cottage on the outskirts of the city. The owner of the house said Mr. and Mrs. Innes had rented It for three months but occupied It only a few days. Nelms also learned he says, that Innes had been Insistent on a house with a furnace, despite the hot weath er, and had purchased a large amount of lye at a nearby store. The search for Innes wtis Iwgun and he and Ids wife were arrested on a furtn near Huge no ore., where they were living under the name of "Har bour.” They had adopted the twin children On warrants charging mur der they were arrested anil brought hack here. Innes maintained his com posure and refused to make extended statements, although denying his guilt and that of his wife. Nelms, Hie Nemesis of the Inneses, declares: That several photographs of Mrs. Dennis were found in the Kan Antonio cottage. Identified Shoe. That n fragment of a shoe Identified as Mrs. Dennis', part of a human skull and some hair were found In the lye vat. That Innes denied Immediately his arrest In Oregon that he had seen Mrs. Dennis after securing her divorce in Nevada, or had ever met Beatrice Nelms. That witnesses In S'an Antonio will swear to seeing the two young women In the company of Innes in San An tonio shortly before their disappear ance In June. Thai several witnesses will testify Mrs. Dennis told them she was on her way to meet Innes. New York.—The United Fruit Com- ( part steamer Metapan today lies partly submerged on a ««nd bae In channel ncarcely 200 yards away from the scene of her collision yesterday aft ernoon with the Hawaiian-American line freight steamer lowan, outbound for San Francisco by way of the Panama Ca nal, The Metepen sank by the head but the forward bulkhead held against the inrush of writ#** and Captain Spen der and officers (ft the United Fruit Company today hoped to be able to take off her cargo of bananas and other fruit and possibly close the great hole below the water aft of her bow and refloat her. The Metapan’s 77 passengers all were rescued by vessels in the lower bay, in cluding a steam dredger, the fishing yacht R. C. Lundy and several tugs Captain Spencer and the greater part of the 92 remained aboard. Ha<l the shoals been another hundred yards away, Cap tain Spencer declared that the Metapan would have gone down with a probable heavy loss of life. The lowan, which car ried no passengers, wsa but slightly damaged. She was one of the first boats to change her reg istry when the new shipping bill was passed by congress.
