POLIC! B! DEATH
Premier Salandre Will Tem
porarily Assume Duties of
Foreign Minister San Guiliano,
Who Died Yesterday
Rome, 8:10 a. m.—The Italian premier
Signor Salandru. will assume temporarily
the portfolio of minister of foreign af
fairs made vacant by the death yester
day of Marquis Antonio di San Guiliano.
This step was decided upon at a coun
cil of the ministers last night.
Nothing is known as to the intentions
of the king or the premier regarding a
permanent secretary to the office. It
is stated from an authoritative source
that the death of the marquis will no*
affect the foreign policy of the govern
ment.
Marquis dl San Giulianc died after
suffering for a month with an affection
of the heart. Almost to *,..e end he
dlrtcted from his sickroom the affairs of
his office so far as possible.
The doctors agree that the war did
not cause the death of the foreign min
ister. but says that the end certainly
was hasteneu by the arduous work to
which he submitted his already weak
ened constitution. When death was
near during a moment of consciousness,
the marquis turned to those about him
and pressing the hand of Under Secre
tary of Foreign Assairs Borsarelll, said-.
“I have done my duty.”
