ROME EDITION VOLUME XIX, No. 291. 61 DETAILS OF ’FRISCO’S LOSS OF MILLIONS Inquiry Resumed Before the Inter-State Commerce Com mission. Reid Dominated the Rock Island Board. Washington.—Some details concern ing the acquisition and subsequent sale at a loss of millions of the Frisco Liner, were developed today when the investigation into the financial opera tions of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway were resumed before the interstate commerce commission. George B. McMurtry of New York, a director of the Rock Island oper ating company and of the New Jer sey holding company of the Rock Is land, gave testimony tending to show that the board of directors practically was dominated by Daniel G. Reid. The witness said he knew personally verv little concerning the financial opera tions of the several companies. Asked about specific transactions —including the Frisco deal, he replied: ‘•No Time for Detail*.” "I didn't have time to go into such details,” said he. Mr. McMurtry said he relied upon the reports of the executive commit tee, which had direct charge of them. George T. Boggs of New York, a di rector of the Rock Island operating company and an official in various capacities of that company for many years, giving his version of the pur chase and subsequent sale by the Rock Island of the Frisco Lines, said ho believed it to be for the best inter est: of the Rock Island to dispose of the Frisco stock to B. F. Yoakum and his asosciates, even at a loss. "The time and condition had changed,” said the witness, ‘‘and ’t was necessary for us to do the best we cruld in the circumstances.” “As a director of the Rock Island Railway, did you cast your votes ac cording to instructions?”_asked Solici tor Folk. “No, I never did. I acted upon my best judgment.” DELEGATES GO to see am Southern Chief Not Wired to Come to Convention; Instead, Representatives Will Visit Him. Washington.—lnstead of telegraph ing General Zapata to send more del egates to the national convention at Auguascalientes, Mex., the assembly has appointed a committee headed by Gen. Felipe Angeles and some of the Zapata delegates who had already ar rived to confer with the southern chief in person. This information was reported to the state department today from Its agent at Aguascalientes. A special train was provided for the committee which is expected to meet Zapata in Cuernavaca tomorrow and explain the purposes of the convention. Administration officials were highly encouraged by the move, regarding it as evidence of the firm purpose of the convention to secure co-operation of all factions for the restoration of peace. Generat Angeles is a close friend of General Villa and served for some time as sub-secretary of war under Carranza but was deposed by the latter. RlßWfii MORE CAREFUL Marconi Wireless Expresses Regret in Sending the Hon olulu Message. Sec’y Daniels Rescinds Closing Order. Washington.-—Upon receiving from the Marconi Company an expression of regret and assurance that greater caution would be exercised in the fu ture. Secretary Daniels today ordered that no further steps be taken In re gard to the sending of a message by the Marconi wireless station at Hono lulu announcing the arrival there Thursday of the German cruiser Geler. Acting Secretary Roosevelt yester day ordered Rear Admiral Moore, com mandant of the naval station at ponrl Harbor, to cloae the wireless station within 14 hours unless the manage ment gave a satisfactory explanation of what the department regarded is a flagrant violation of neutrality. The message was sent during the tempo rary absence of the naval censor on duty at the station. In transmitting the company's state ment today Admiral Moore expressed the opinion that there had been no intentional violation of neutrality and advised that the promise of greater caution in tbe future be accepted. ■-■■■ THE ONE PAPER IN MOST HOMES-THE ONLY PAPER IN MANY HOMES ======= THE AUGUSTA HERALD I i WE GIVE PURPLE STAMPS.
