Haynes McKadden, secretary of the Georgia Bankers' Association, Is send ing out to members a letter written to President L. G. Council of the as sociation, by Mr. Mills B. Lane, of Savannah, who says: "It is out opinion that the planter will he ns great a loser by damaged cotton next spring when he Is ready to sell as he Is damaged by low prices now. I believe it would do more good if the bankers' association could bring <|i about a campaign to make the farm ers protect their cotton tlian anything it has attempted.” Commenting on this President Council says: "I certainly think it would be well for our association to get busy along this line and try to prevail upon the farmers to store their cotton in the warehouses and out of the weather. If our banks will take hold of this it will, In my Judgment, help materially. "I might also say that the farmers, as I see It, should bring their cotton in to. the warehouses If for no other purpose than to turn the receipts over to their creditors. In my section I find many of them are holding back their cotton on their farms, when they have obligations that should be se cured at least with the warehouse re ceipts for this cotton until finally sold.” The Hankers’ Association, which Is making every effort to relieve the sit uation in eotton. will make a cam paign all over the state, urging that the cotton be properly protected. An early date was favored by some of tlie southern bankers, as they thought the federal banks might ren der aid in handling the cotton crop. The directors were leaving for their homes today to begin the work pre liminary to the opening of the banks. HARD FIGHTING BF HOKE SMITH Atlanta, Ga.—The defeat of the cot ton relief bill In the national house of representatives last nlsht seemed to mark the last hope of the Southern democrats who had worked so hard, but dispatches received here stated that Senator Hoke Smith and hta as sociates had not yet abandoned the fiftht and would not until the final adjournment of conpress. The bill provides for the deposit of two hundred and fifty million dollars of government funds in southern banks to be loaned to coton planters and growers. The vote was 121 to 91 against It. Even those who helped to defeat the measure paid a tribute on the floor to Senator Smith, who had worked so strenuously to secure some kind of legislation which would help the outli In her crisis. Had It not been for the Indifference of Northern and Western democrats the measure would have passed, a number of Re publicans believing In Us value and voting for it. MERCER 27; KINGS COLLEGE 7. Macon, Ga. Mercer trimmed King's College, Bristol, Tenn.. here yesterday by a score of -7 to 7.
