Statesboro, Ga. -The west .ships In
to Georgia each year millions of dol

the hay shipments and the oat* ship

more than $€3,000,000. If the prime
purpose behind the county fair* held
throughout the state* is wervad by these

fnrrnor* will soon face the necessity
of finding a market elsewhere than
In Georgia for their corn, oats, hay
and meat.
The Bulloch County Fair ha* be
come an Institution. Htateaboro and
Bulloch County owe* a lot to Mr. J. R.
Miller, editor of The Btate*boro New*,
end the mo*! enthu*if»Hilc and one of
the mo*t successful fair promoters in
Georgia.. In spite of existing condi

caused by the European war, the fair
was put op this year, Mr. Miller be
lieving that because of the vital ne
cessity of the farmer* of this section
finding a substitute for cotton and be
coming self-sustaining now, the coun
ty f«lr whs more essential this year
than ever before.
Nor would the visitor to the grounds
gather the impression from the agri
cultural and livestock exhibits, in gen
eral as splendid as are shown at any
county fair In this section, that this Ik
an afi*octton county. Perhaps too
much cotton has been raised, in fact
there is no denying it. but the mag
nificent. displays of agricultural prod

swine, the cattle and the livestock,
but particularly the farm product*
exclusive of cotton indicate beyond
doubt that throughout thl* splendid
section there are farmers who have,

iheir cotton money for bread and meat
and other of life’* necessities.
Many Atttractive Features.
The fair is less of a show than It is
on education course, blit the arnu«e
--! ment features have not been over
booked. More attention is given to in-
Istriiction than lo entertainment,
though in addition to showing the
largest gourds and the biggest pump
kins raised in the county, the midway
is here the fakir in all his glory with
varied and sundry assortment of
freaks and there is plenty of music
and every afternoon races are run in
which the fastest horses of this sec
tion are entered.
Mr. Miller lias put on as complete
a county fair as one would care to
see, and it typifies the agricultural
progress of the county, shows one
farmer what another Is doing and in
spires the all-cotton farmer to greater
and bette** things.
An Unusual Exhibit.
A highly instructive and most val
uable exhibit is made by the First
District Agricultural School, of which
Mr. Miller has the hearty co-operation
in holding each year the county fair.
Not only arc shown a variety of ag
ricultural product* made at the school
farm, but among other things the boll
weevil Is explained. Pome of Ihe In
sect* are shown under glass. The
warning is Issued that the weevil is
corning this way, and the cotton far
mers are urged to co-operate with the
agencies at work to starve them out
and stamp them out. It i* likewise
shown how the agricultural school
keeps its cattle free from ticks. The
practical use of the spray pump to
successfully combat and guard against,
the deadly San Jose Scale is also
shown.
Th*» Agricultural School ha* bsou
breeding corn for the past four year*,
and some splendid specimens are on
exhibition. Prof. IC. C. J. Dickens is
In charge of thl* exhibit.
The Home Economic* Department
of the First District Agricultural
School, occupying a separate building,
is attracting ns much attention as
anything on the fair grounds, espe
cially the attention of the women vis
itor*. An exhibit i* here made show
ing the practical work that Is done by
the girls attending the agricultural
school sewing and needlework, fancy
work, arfrl canning and preserving
fruit* and vegetables. .
Plenty of Everything.
Including a wide variety of product*
of the live-ttt-home farmer, Ml J. W.
Williams make* the heat lnulvidual

ment. Hardly anything the soil will
produce that some of it 1* not shown.
Messrs, J. I*. Franklin Son*, J. C.
and Herbert, Franklin, are exhibitor*
in practically every department, spec
lallxing on livestock, swine and cattle.
The Franklin* are breeders of live
stock and among ilie most progressive
farmers of this section. In their ag
ricultural display are included a
Quantity of magnificent Fulghum oats,
to the growing of which they give spe
cial attention, home-grown meat, fine

year-old Jersey bull weighing 910

Poultry.
The most complete poultry show I
have seen at a county fair anywhere
this season forma an Important part
of the Bulloch fair, and it is rather an
important fact that the birds are ex -
hibited In dosens of different people
rather than by two or three poultry
men, showing that throughout this
section the importance of this profit
able Industry Is fully reallxed and that
many are realising from this source
of profit.
Among the better showings are
some beautiful Rhode Island Reds, by
Mr H S. Harr. Sr ; several pens of
Anconas and White Plymouth Rocka,
by Mr J Arthur Bunch: Buff Or

A Splendid Work,

districts of Bulloch Bounty are work

OVER THOUSAND
MARSH HENS KILLED
YESTERDAY; BRUNSWICK
Brunswick, Ga. —Brunswick sports
men had a great day of it yesterday,
and as r result, the marshhen popula
tion In nearby waters has decreased
by at least one thousand.
Of course it is impossible to state
with any accuracy just how many of
the birds were killed, but dozens of
hunters were out and almost every
one of them had good luck. The high
spring tide completely covered the
marsh and the birds for once hnd no
escape. That a thousand at least were
kilted there is no doubt, and half of
Brunswick’s population will probably
enjoy marshhen today.

It effects such prompt relief, even
in aggravated Eczema that it is a
never-ending source of amassment to

For many years bold-sulphur has
occupied a secure position in the
treatment of cutaneous eruptions by
reason of its cooling, parasite-destroy

to take its place in overcoming irrit

Those troubled should get from any

and the prompt relief afforded is very
welcome, particularly when the Ecze

Macon, Ga.—Thos. E. Watson, Geor
gia editor and one-time populist can
didate for the presidency, has given
Mercer University $5,000 in cash, in
terest on which is to educate fresh
nun who need help. This announce
ment was made at Mercer chapel
Thursday morning. It also was stated
that Mr. Watson had provided in his
will that Mercer receive his library
when he dies.
Mr. Watson is an alumnus of Mercer
University and had to work his way
through college. He had struggles
during his effort to secure an edu
cation that now cause him to feel for
the struggling boys of Georgia who
wish to fit themselves for the battles
of life. Ever since leaving Mercer
Mr. Watson has had a tender regard
for the school and it is not surprising
that he has given that Institution $5,000
and has indicated that he will feive
the college his library when he is
dead.
Mr. Watson’s library Is one of the
most complete in the country and
probably no single individual has a
better or larger selection of standard
works.
A Pertinent Question.
The question has been asked, “In
what way are Chamberlain’s Tablets
superior to pills?" The answer is,
‘They are more mild and gentle in ef
fect and more reliable. Besides they
improve the appetite, cleanse and in
vigorate the stomach, correct disor
ders of the liver and leave the bowels
in a natural and healthy condition,
while the use of pills, owing to their
drastic effect, is often followed by
constipation. For sale by all dealers.
At the low rate, charged
