HASTEN DR. WATSON WITH THE NEEDLE, HE'S IN A BAD FIX
T HAPPENED This Way: Recently There Has Been a Great Demand for Short, Fur-Trimmed Coat Suits for Certain Figures and Ages. In fact, They are Quite the Rage in the Larger Cities, and cer
tainly They are to Be Found at Kelly’s. A Customer Walked Into Our Store a Few Days Ago and Asked to Be Shown Short Coat Suits. Our Saleman Quickly Showed Her Orfe, Two, Three, a Dozen
Models. Every One Different, All in the Newest Materials and Shades; Some Fur-Trimmed, Others Velvet-Trimmed. Turning to Her Companion, She Said: “I Told You We Would Find Them at
Kelly’s. Why, That Man Made Me Angry Talking Such Foolish Talk as He Did.” Naturally Our Salesman Asked What the Trouble Was, And She Unhesitatingly Replied, “Why, I Went Into one of
the Stores on the Other Side of the Street and Asked to Be Shown Coat Suits. I Was Shown Long Coat After Long Coat. But I Want a Short Coat, Fur-Trimmed,” She Said, “And the Salesman Look
ed at Me In Wonder and Astonishment. One of the Proprietors Then Came Up and the Saleman Made Known My Wants. ‘Why, Short Coats Are Not Worn,’ Said He. Why, I Have Just Received a
Catalogue From So-and-So,’ Mentioning a Reliable New York House, “and They Are Featuring Them, and a Friend of Mine Bought One at Kelly’s,’ Said I.” “Oh, ho,” Said He, With a Laugh, “That’*

Academy Boys and Tubman Girls
Guests of Manager Tant at the Grand
A very decided and attractive social
feature of the entertainment at the
Grand last night, when there was a
special Saturday evening production
by the Acme Plays company, was the
presence in the boxes of the basketball
team of the Tubman High school and
the football team of the Richmond
academy. There were about 18 rep
resentatives of each of these popular
Augusta institutions present in the
large and elite audience that thronged
the Grand last night, the young la
dies from the Tubman gracing the
boxes on the south side of the house,
while the young gentlemen of the
academy heamed from the tipper and
'lower rows of the boxes on the north
"side. Tne academy lads were the
heroes of the occasion, as they were
exulting over their magnificent vic
tory yesterday afternoon over the
mighty eleven of the Georgia Military
college. While most of them wore
facial decorations not usually exhib
ited in company, such as black eyes,
bruised cheeks, scratched noses and
swollen ears (which, under the cir

a result of the terrific gridiron con

ily applauded the hits of the photo

dancing of Miss Hollingsworth and her
confreres. While the fair athletes on
the other side of the house have not
yet played any of the games on their
arduous schedule, they bore a proud
consciousness of their splendid vic
tories of last season, and the smiles
of encouragement which they bent
upon the Jubilant young warriors of
old Richmond contained also an ele
ment of challenge to the effect that
they, too, would show them how to

REDMOND’S REQUEST FOR
OFFICIAL RECOGNITION
IRISH REGIMENT MET
Dublin —John Redmond’s request for
the official recognition of an Irish
brigade has been met. The National
ist leader shortly before the proroga
tion of Parliament declared that his
country had a right to claim that Irish
recruits for. the Expeditionary Force
should be kept together as a unit, of
ficered as far as possible by Irishmen
and composed if possible of county
battalions "so that Ireland may gain
national credit for their deeds and
feel like other communities of the
Empire, that she, too, had'contribut
ed an army bearing her name in this
historic ■struggle.”
Since that manifesto was published
recruiting in Ireland, north and south,
bus been active, and now the Irish
brigade, as outlined by Mr. Itedmond,
is being formed. It will consist ot
the 16th division of the new arms
composed of twelve purely Irish bat
talions with headquarters at Mallow,
County Cork. Most of its officers,
including the commander, will be
Irishment, and Mr. Redmond has
agreed to regard the division as the
Irish Brigade.
Lieutenant General Kir Lawrence
Worthington Parsons, a former "gun
ner” and a King's County man, has
been appointed to the command. Kir
Lawrence formerly held an Irish com
mand, while he did good service In
South Africa, being present at the re
lief of Ladysmith. Since then he has
been Inspector General of Artillery In
India. He was knighted on his re
tirement two years ago.
RAISING FUND FOR USE
INDIAN FORCES IN WAR
London,—Earl Roberts Is raising a
fund which will be diverted exclusive
ly to the use of the Indian forces In
the present war. Already he has re
ceived $250,000 and within two weeks
he hopes to have enough money to
equip a special hospital in the south
of England for the care of the sick
and wounded Indian soldiers.
The fund will also be used to pro
vide warm clothing especially suited
(o the Indian troops. Rations of the
English army are wholly unlike the
customary diet of the Indians, and
special dishes will be provided for
them out of the fund. Indians are es
pecially fond of sugar, spices and all
sorts of sweets.
Princess Mary and her advisers are
making special preparations to send
the Indians Uhristmas gifts which will
especially appeal to them. It Is like
ly the gifts will take the form of boxes
of candles and other sweetmeats par
ticularly relished by the men from the
Far East.

MODERN WAY TO TAKE
WOUNDED FROM FIELD
USED BY U. S. CORPS
London. —The American Volunteer
Motor-Ambulance Corps, organized by
Richard Norton of Boston, Mass., has j
equipped ten inotor-nmbulances to as
alst In the Immediate removal of the
wounded from the battlefields In Eu
rope. In many cases the wounded
have been without medical aid from
five to seven days, says Mr. Norton,
thereby promoting the deadly effects
of tetanus, gangrene, and other dan
gerous complications.
The first i nit of this American
corps, with Harvard, Yale and Prince
ton graduates largely represented
among the volunteers, has already left
for the front, accompanied r>> Mr.
Norton, under the charge of Col. A. .1.
Barry, of the British Red Cross So
ciety, with a staff of two medical of
ficers, twenty bearers, (two to each
car) and three expert motor engi

It Is desired to equip other units, for
which contributions are being receiv

Ambulance Corps,” care of Brown,

Among the volunteers going with
the ambulances are D. P. Ktarr end

CAN U?E ENTRENCHING
TOOL AS SHIELD; CANADA
Blaslngitoke, England. Canadian
troops arriving at Hallshury Plain
carry ari entrenching tool that Is novel
to the Englishman. It Is capable of
being used as a shield and Is slung
across their shqulder In a leather case.
The tool Is a spade weighing about
four pounds, and consequently can he
carried at all times The spade has an
oval hole In the center of It through
which a gun barrel can bo thrust. The
tool thus serves both as a rifle rest
and a shlold to the soldier In the
trenches.
All the spades have been subjected
to heavy fire and the metal In them
is practically bullet-proof. At a dis
tance of 200 yards heavy ammunition
only cracks the shields and does not
penetrate them.
