Three loaves of staie bread and a sack ot apples was all we had. The apples I had picked off my tree in the gar ; den some days before. “The very first day wo occupied our pit a German cavalry patrol entered the village, and having taken all they could find to drink, departed. Tha next day, a whole division arrived. Wi sought shelter in our pit, and the con tinued presence of the German soldiery compelled us to remain there for days. Our bread was soon gone, and we were compelled to live on apples. In Hole Six Days. "For six day* wi re were in this mis erable position, and I began to feel very ill from weakness and pains brought about through eating the fruit. So bad was I the following day that I decided to give myself Up and see what I could do for my family, rather than watch them die of starvation. "With this intention I began to crawl towards the German lines, when f was ’net with the clm I lenge, "Hands up!" I w a V, v. '» a I I loi.ld h;i nlly * io so. An officer then came forward and be gan to question in* . As I could speak German fluently, I answered him in his own language, and he took me for on n of his own countrymen. Following him to a house, be asked me for my pa pers. I told him a story that I had lost them while trying to get away. Fortunately, he appeared to believe me. Left Alone. "Anyhow, instead of arresting and confining me somewhere, be left me alone, and I was able to go back and bring my family home. They pre sented a heart-breaking sight, being very ill-looking and dirty. My young er child was very bad indeed, and 1 wax afraid she would die. The offi cer I hove spoken of. still thinking I was a German, gave us some bread to eat, and we remained in our home wondering what would happen next. “Not bmg afterwards Home of the German soldiers broke into our rooms and seeing us with bread accused me of stealing It. One of them was about to run me through with a bayonet, when I shouted out In German that one of bis officers had given it to me. Still Taken for German. This fellow also thought I was a German and so spared my life. But this wah not all. Another half-drunk en German soldier got hold of me and compelled me to go with him. Ha broke into a bouse, the Inhabitants of which had fortunately fled. "Seeing there wns no one there, the Gorman soldier began to smash every thing be could hoc. and ordered me to do the same. In fear of losing my life at Ids hands. I was compelled to lo so, whereupon he gave me a cigar and laughed, saying: “Well done, country man; well done!” "We next went to a case, the terri fied patron of which was ordered to bring food and drink. My captor drank everything brought to him. and he whh soon drunk. This enabled me to es cape from his hands, and carefully avoiding any more of the Germans who were now moving away, I got back to my family. We decided to make for Malines and Antwerp, and after much suffering we managed to reach the last named place, where kind friends conveyed us to England. In England everyone has been most kind Urns.” DESTRUCTION OF ZEPPELIN NO. 5 01BUSS Cavalry Brigade With Horse Battery Sight German Air- Ship.--Is Finally Brought Down. The pontiff urged the Mexican clergy to trust in a better future and said he added his prayers to theirs for the triumph of the church and of justice, in the meanwhile he sent them money to aid priests who have been deprived of their possessions as well as to suc cor the congregation* driven from their homes. Serious Condition. Reports received at the Vatican de pict as serious the present condition of the Catholic church in Mexico. Ac cording to this information priests have been expelled from their dio ceses and exiled to Ver.. Mexican leaders have not refrained from persecuting the church, accord ing to these reports to the Vatican. General Villa ordered the hanging of Jesuit Christian brothers and General Carranza ordered the confiscation of the property of the clergy. The vicar general of Mexico, under threat of pillage of the churches, was obliged to give up the administration of the arch diocese and the Catholic univer sity, the archbishopric and several Catholic colleges at Puebla were con verted Into barracks.
