Under preparation (though nut yet for distribution) are the follow ing: Use of Vegetables from Winter Gar- I dens; How to Make and Use Fireless Cookers; Preparation of Canning Club Prod ucts for the Table; Rome Home-Made Step-Raving De viees. Practical demonstration work for the irlrls of the South has only been carried on actively since 1910, when n few canning clubs were organized. Rinre then the canning clubs have taken in more than 40,000 girls un der the supervision of nearly 400 wo men agents. The total value of the canned poods of these young women of the South was *190.420.0f, In 1912. Special products of Southern fruits and vegetables have been developeiuta n considerable extent. Reports thus far received Indicate that tile records of 1914 will far surpass those of last year. A more recent development, that poultry club, has now 2,090 members. | These young girls have Increased materially the supply of wholesome food as ■ well as the Income of the farm home by their sales of prod ucts They are now to he taught the; actual preparation of wholesome food In a wholesome and economical man ner In the kitchen. Washington, D. C.— 13 states under federal quarantine and cattle shipments barred from Canada, offi cials of the Department of Agricul ture working with local authorities pressed their’fight today to halt the spread of the foot and mouth disease among livestock. Colder weather in the Infected states, it was believed would tend to check the epidemic. Can’t Estimate Effect. Department officials said they c(*til,l not estimate the effect of the quaran tine against Canada, until it was de termined whether the cattle had been imported for immediate slaughter or to be fattened. Yearly Importations ot cattle from the dominion amount to about $9,000,000.
