SHE SUGGESTS THINGS
WOMEN LIKE TO RECEIVE.
“The hundreds and hundreds of
dollars worth of Christmas pres
ents I used to get,” said Miss Dix.
“only depressed me and made me
feel guilty. All that money spent
for a lot of junk—a collection of
dust collectors—till I decided to
be sensible and credit my friends
with being sensible.
“I just told them all that I didn’t
want any more useless things.
Nobody can have too many sheets
and pillow cases, nor too many
napkins and table cloths. I told
the people that I knew well
enough to speak frankly to. that
I had no place and no apprecia-*
tion for useless gifts. They took
it splendidly and I know they were
secretly relieved. Now they know
what they’re going to make for me
or going to give to me and it is
always something sensible and
useful and we all enjoy ourselves.
Her Most Delightful Present a Set
of Kitchen Utensils.
“The idea of sensible gifts is
good not only for people in mod
erate circumstances, for the rich
est woman values something for
her house or home, things for
her wardrobe, that can be really
utilized. Do you know what I re
gard as the most delightful Christ
mas present I ever had?
a complete set of kitchen utensils
and cooking paraphernalia!
“Even a woman who has every
thing on earth that she wants to
buy, appreciates a hand-mode
nightrobe, a fine hemstitched
towel, initialed handkerchiefs, or
table linen —not the awful bric-a
brac stuff that gets in the way,
but serviceable things.
“Why should a well-meaning
friend offer us horrible vases,
glass ornaments, hideous looking
rocking chairs, perfumes that we
despise, etc., etc.?
“After all, giving should be the
expression of intimate regard.
The time is past for universal
gifts that involve people in unde
sirable obligations. The smallest
offering is sufficient to express
hearty good-will and the better
the taste and judgment exercised
—that is, the more useful and
sensible the gift, the greater the
appreciatio- on the part of the
one who received the favor.
Gloves, Stockings, Neckpieces,
Handkerchiefs —All These Should
Be Considered.
“No sensible woman ought to
feel that she has give i her friends
a real greeting in the form of a
Christmas gift if she has failed to
find out If they would like a pair
of gloves, a pair of silk stockings,
some dainty neckpiece, handker
chiefs —in short, showing a per
sonal regard for her preferences
or needs.
“It is not enough to limit, one’s
giving to common sense variety
and scope, but one should take a
firm stand about receiving gifts.
If women would make themselves
known as feeling Irritation and
annoyanee 'ar more strongly than
gratitude for a raft of silly germ
inviting junk, everybody would be
greatly benefited.”

7he Advantages of
Globe* Wernicke Sectional Book Cases
The economy of buying only enough shelf space to meet one’s present
requirements. As your library grows more sections to match are always in stock.
The ease with which Globe-Wernicke sections can be arranged and rearranged
serves still further to make them the final choice of the far-sighted home fur
nisher. Each section is a solid piece of furniture. You can lift the separate sec
tions one by one and carry them with books intact. This is risky work with col
lapsible or knock-down book cases, as the sides of such cases fly apart and spill
the books. Many a library compactly housed in Globe-Wernicke sections has
been saved from fire and water because the entire book case, books and all could
be moved to safety a section at a time. The variety of beautiful styles and hand
some finishes you have to choose from makes it easy to match your other furni
ture.
