The reduction of the Ital ian import duty gave further encourage ment to the bulls. Most of the larger houses were on the buying side. After opening l-Bal-4 to l-4a3-8 up, prices made a slight general gain and then steadied at a little above Saturday night's level. Cold weather had a bearish effect on the corn market. The opening, which varied from 1-8 to 3-8 lower was ollow ed by an additional moderate decline. Oats showed sympathy with the weak ness of corn. Packers' buying rallied provisions. Old and new style contracts were dealt In and this ceaused some confusion hut generaly speaking trad ing progressed very smoothly and prices held fairly steady after some early irreg ularity. Old style December contracts opened below 7 54, which meant that the con tracts taken over by the corporation would go into the hands of the syndi cate and later sold off to 7.36 but the new style contracts ruled generally steady with March selling around 7.85 and May 8.05. After the first hour of trading It was estimated that between 75,000 and 125,- 000 bales had changed hands. Heavy liquidation of old contracts Which had been thrown Into the pool was In pro gress. The South was buying a little but Liverpool and the continent were evidently proceeding with much caution. Prices held fairly steady. Trading was quiet during the middle of the day and prices eased off several points under the early high level under scattered selling, part of which seemed to be the liquidation of early buyers. • Slowly Downward. .New Orleans,—The market opened steady.
