Old Ladies Shiver at the Word Zeppelin. New York,—"Automobiles running without lights through the street* of darkened London kill mote persona than bombs dropped from a raiding I Zeppelin would,” said Lord Richard Neville of Iy>ndon, upon his arrival i today on the, steamship Transylvania, j "Thern are many persons who believe ithe darkening of the city Is unneces sary,” continued Lord Neville. “On moonlight nights the enemy would not 1 have the slightest difficulty in locat ing y." The Whole Country. London. The lowered lights order Issued to hide Ignition from marauding airships now lias been extended to the whole country. The restrictions are not as rigid in Iho provincial cities as In the capital, but they prohibit all sky signs and other conspicuous Il luminations. Curtains of passenger train coaches must, under the new order, be drawn while trains lire traveling at night, j Authorities evidently believe trains might act as guides to the enemy's airships. The famous Guild Hall, which Is the town hall of London, has been insur 'd against damage by aircraft for $2,000,000. The premium paid was $5,000. St. Raul's and Westminster Abbey also have been Insured, ac cording to current report*. The Short Days. The majority of London's popula tion apparently Is beginning to be re sentful Instead of appreciative of these precautions. Now that the short days have begun, the discomforts of a darkened city are Increased. Three persons have been killed on the streets at night during the past week. CornmlHsionor of police has Issued an appeal to motor drivers to kusen the burden on the police. Largo spirit of rush and recklessness, aris ing from war-time excitement, ac counts largely far careless driving. Hundreds of motors are employed on military duties and'these carrying iho magic sign “O. H. M. From Germany wireless messages Londoners have heard that thousands are fleeing to Scotland from fear of the Zeppelins. That is the first news of any such exodus that had been di vulged here. Old ladles shiver at the word Zeppelin, but the general public Is apathetic. The seaside hotels at Brighton and other channel resorts are filled with their usual comple ment of the leisure classes, notwith standing the chances of a bombard ment width the German dash to Yar mouth this week showed a danger to tie reckoned with. Kngland is to have tf* own fleet of dirigibles by the beginning of next year, if plans of a company recently formed with a capital of $1,000,1)00 prove successful. Works now are being constructed, the promoter says. The new al ships, although smaller than the Zeppelins, are described as vastly more dangerous.
