Public Mind WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH AUGUSTA’S MERCHANTS? ! To The Herald : Why this apparently acquiescent at titude on the part of Augusts relative .to the Augusta-Aiken doubling Its fares? Over here In the Horse Creek i Valley we are up In arms about It, so are the people at Belvedere and- also the Atkenltes with the exception of [the merchants of Aiksn who will Wel lcome an increase because It will re i store to them a trade which the bund ling of the Augusta-Aiken took from them many years ago. The mer chants of Augusta, of all the people, should he the most interested. They I get the benefit of the cheap fares and j .vet not a word has been heard from them or their Merchants ,and Manu 'facturers' Association. We people over here cannot understand It. Since the Augusta-Aiken line was built the mer chants of Aiken have not carried the same line of articles that they did be fore, because there Is no demand for i them since the pergilp of that town and ; section go to Augusta to buy their clothing, where they can find a great ei variety of fine goods, etc. Also a I great many people from Aiken and the ! Horse Creek Valley buy almost all of - their groceries In Augusta where they ! c an get them cheaper than over here. As 1 understand It, the lots In Bel- I vedere were sold to the people by the ! Augusta-Aiken with the Inducement that the fare to Augusta was only 5 , cents. Now, It is proposed to double lit I also understand that when the | railway company secured a franchise to enter Aiken that It was upon the agreement to have a 25 cents fare to and from Augusta. Now, the railway company talks about their system and the Puke sys tem between Greenville, Anderson, Spartanburf, etc., and says It charges much less than the Duke and much less than any other inter urban road in South Carolina, Well, look at the dlfferen.ee In the conveniences. Here we have few ac commodations compared to those on the Puke system. What on earth is the matter with the people of Augusta? Over in Co lumbia not a representative of any kind from Augusta’s commercial in terests came to raise one word of protest when the railroad commission had a hearing on the matter. It does seem that a delegation of merchants would have come or sent a represen tative. They seem not to want the trade from over here and 1 dare say. that hundreds of thousands of dol lars are annually spent In Augusta by reason of the cheap fares to your city on the AuguHta-Alken. Of course, If the people qf Augusta do not care whether the rates are raised or not I suppose that they will be, therehy taking away trade which any other city would not relinquish without the severest sort of struggle. Yours for cheaper fares to Augusta, J. H. C. ABOUT THAT CEMETERY. To Tile Herald: , 1 would like very much to use your columns again In an attempt to square myself with any of your many read ers. who, like Miss Or Mr. S. R. ,T„ may have misunderstood my suggestion of recent date In regard to I’antheon View, the new necropolis on the Hill. . Now the easiest way out would be to j advise that they read the article over j carefully, and tee what my sugges tions really wera, but ns your corre spondent cither overlooked my moan ; tug ns regards to Pere la Chaise or Is a little dull <>f comprehension It would .seem that 1 would have to explain i myself more full; , which 1 will try • to do. j If your corespondent will look through the second paragraph she (or het will run across the sentence “even though a high sounding name woyld be a good Id. a " Now road this sen tence over carefully in connection with ithe rest of the paragraph and see, with everything fully considered, if this could he called a suggestion, if \our correspondent will admit the facts. 1 think he or she will say It was merely a little pun of hla own. (A , little competition for “Tad '). Whether I I can pronounce the word Pere la Chaise seems also to he In doubt. To which I can truthfully say that I can, j thank* to my "bought at home edu cation," though 1 must admit my Ig j norauce of Its meaning. Although ns l *ay 1 have a fairly good education 1 was never taught the French language, hut I consider my self competent In the English : tongue. And again S. R. J. seems to he mistaken about the name Green wood. I>ld I say that the name of Greenwood Cemetery was frayed? I did not. As has been said there is only one ißrooklyni by that name, hut every little town In the country seems to go by that name, there are lo’ my certain knowledge forty-two. Rather frayed. Eh? Have any of us investigated why the place was named Pantheon View? Don't you think that would be a good Idea" U didn't say a word about that, did 1?) But It seems to me that Mr Wtllet must have had good reasons In selecting It. and Mr. Krand for accepting It. I am sure I both are gentlemen of high Intelll : gence. F. G. STEVENS.
