Dr. Converse traveled 2,300 miles up the Amazon to reach Iquitos. Yellow fever and hook worm were the diseases causing the most trouble. At least 90 per cent of the people were suffering from hookworm, said Dr. Converse today. He found the city very filthy and immediately instituted a clean lng-up campaign. There was no hos pital or facilities of any kind afforded by the municipality and the American’s work was considerably handicapped. But before he left Dr. Converse had succeeded In reducing the death rate to 21 per 1,000, he said, and had es tablished a well established clinic which he says will at the end of ten years have succeeded In saving the lives of four thousand afflicted in habitants. "Hookworm infection," ho says, "makes the people earth eaters. Clay, fondles and even the bricks of their houses are eaten as a consequence of the peculiar appetite engendered by the disease. R. L.
