Another Inappropriate Name.
To The Herald:
Reading with interest in your col
umns the opinions expressed by many
Augustans in regard to the name se
lected for our new burying ground .it
has occurred to us'that there was an
other name misapplied.
We have reference to the new dan
sant, which it Is proposed to call the
"San Soucl,” which is the French for
“I should woiry.’ For various rea
sons, this name Is as Inappropriate,
when applied to a dansant, such a 3
this is Intended to be. as “Pantheon
View was to the cemetery.
Wlshlngto help, like “Helen,” we of
fer one suggestion that the new dan
sant be called “Pantheon View” and
let “Sans Kouci" remain undisturbed.
Thanking you, we are.
Respectfully,
I. A. R., K. H. E.
Stealing in Cemetery.
To The Herald: (
Will you please allow me space in
your paper to call the attention of our
Honorable Mayor, City Council, and
citizens of Augusta, to the promiscu
ous stealing that is being perpetrated
daily in our City Cemtery? I did not
know that the City Cemtery was be
ing invaded daily by thieves until four
years ago. Since that time I have
had a section in the cemtery In which
1 have buried four of my family. in
the beginning the grounds were robbed
of flowers and potted plants, and it
has never ceased. In the fall and in
the winter, bulbs that are planted are
dug up and carried away. Yesterday,
the 23rd, my wife went to the cemetery
and found the rnfire section and graves
dug up and all the bulbs planted had
been stolen.
Gentlemen, it does seem to me that
something could be done to stop this
bold stealing in the cemetery. If you
doubt what I have said, I can and will
produce a score of witnesses that will
testify that my statements are true.
For instance, I will refer you to Hr
Bredenberg and Mr. Joe Eve. I am
pursuaded to believe that the stealing
is being done by parties that have sec
tions in charge to be kept in good con
dition.
Any person or persona that will rob
a grave will murder you If they have
an opportunity, and I do hope, gentle
men, that you will devise some plan to
protect the graves of the dead.
Yours respectfully,
A. P. DICKS.

FROM A STUDENT’S POINT OF
VIEW.
To The Herald.
Why decrease the number of holi
days at Christmastime - ; Two weeks
have been given since time Immemo
rial. Why change now without suf
ficient cause?
Some time ago The Herald printed
an article saying that the high schools
of this city were not doing the class
of work that they should. Statistics
show that percentage of failure in the
high schools has grown smaller from
year to year and this while there
were two weeks as Christmas holi
days until new the percentage is
surprisingly small. This seems to In
dicate that the schools are increas
ing In efficiency and this without go
ing to school from Christmas to New
Year's.
Where is the person who can prove
that the high schools of this city are
not doing A No. 1 work?
I defy any person to name a sec
ondary school in the South that is
doing more and better work than is
being done at present at the Academy
of Richmond county.
These Christmas holidays come at
a time when the high school pupils
need a let-up in their studies. A two
weeks' recreation will do fat more
good toward promoting efficiency than
the same time spent in laborious study.
Q. B. X.
THE ONE-WEEK HOLIDAY.
To The Herald.
It lias been almost decided by the
board of education to give one week
for the Christmas holidays. That is,
five days, for we never go to school
on Saturday and Sunday.
lne one of the local newspapers the
statement was made O.at for the high
schools of Augusta and Richmond
county to come in with the A first
class high schools of the South one
week of the holidays was to be turned
Into a week of study.
Have the high schools of this city
not been accomplishing the work re
quired?
I am sure that the courses this
year are the same as they were lasi
year or, if anything, they are lighter.
Gentlemen of the board of educa
tion, look Into this.
A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT.
THE BANKERS AND
THE FARMERS.
Editor of the Herald:
Allow me to express my appreciation
of the remarks made hy "a prominent
banker" in Sunday's Herald on the
attitude of the farmers in holding
their cotton for better prices. Of
course if they don't owe anything they
have as much right as another to spec
ulate for a rise; but if by their action
they cause their factor to pay interest
for a day longer than the stipulated
time on the money he borrowed to
lend to them they are robbing him as
surely as if they put their hands in
his pockets.
We've been having a lot of cheap
fustian about the government's duty
to help out the cotton planters. It is
no more the Government's duty to
help themthan to help the growers of
apples or potatoes. Our Senior
Senator has been making himself un
duly conspicuous In advocating such
discriminations, although it may tend
to make hint popular with those voters
who set interest above principle.
No one may deny that in a crisis of
this kind, involving such huge inter
ests in a large section of the country
thst they became national in import
ance, the general government should
use its best efforts to realize the sit
uation, but this should bo done with
an eye to the welfare of the country as
a whole and not to that of any one
ssciion. however Important.
There is little to add to the com
plete and very concise argument of
vour "prominent banker.” One hint
that he gives out may. however, be
Stressed, which is that even if the
ethics of the case do not appeal to the
delinquent farmer he might Jo well
to ponder upon the prospects of get
ting credit the next time he needs it!
Verily, Mr Editor, honesty is the
best policy— when you want to borrow
money!
