FLOAT MICHIGAN
IT HIGH TIDE
U. S. Battleship Expected to
Easily Come Off Sandy Bot
tom Struck During Fog.
Norfolk, Va. The battleship Mich
igan, which grounded early yesterday
at the tall of the horseshoe, off Cape
Henry, still is fast aground this morn
ing, with navy tugs lying by. The sea
is calm and the vessel is said to be
In no danger. At full high tide today
the Michigan probably will float un
hurt.
AT HIGH TIDE.
Capo Charles, Va. High tide was
awaited early today to float the bat
tleship Michigan, aground off here.
The weather was calm and the war
ship was not thought to be in any
immediate danger. It was believed
that with 20 feet of water at high tide
the Michigan,- with a mean draft of
25 feet, would float herself free. Four
naval tugs stood by to assist In get
ting the vessel off.
The Michigan was resting on a
sandy bottom about 11 miles off the
Virginia capes. The vessel struck dur
ing a heavy, fog, but sustained no In
juries. She was proceeding at the time
from the southern drill grounds to
Hampton roads with other vessels of
the Atlantic fleet. Efforts were made
later by the tugs to float her, but
without success.
Fletcher Reports.
Washington, D. C.— Rear Admiral
Fletcher reported today he expected
to get the batleship Michigan off the
sandy bottom in wh,ieh her stern rests
during high tide late this afternoon.
In case the high tide today is not suf
ficient to float the ship she will be
lightened.

Florence, So. Dakota.—“l used to be
