De cember notice day in the local cotton market but according to early estimates not more than 700 bales we're issued and after opening steady at an advance of one point to a decline of one point the market developed considerable firmness. Houses with foreign connections appear ed to have buying orders while there was covering by December and May shorts with prices selling about three to seven points net higher soon after the call. Heavy exports from New Orleans yesterday probably helped the early mar ket, while the small notices were a bull ish factor on the near months and there was pot house buying of May. December was relatively firm during the afternoon on a continued demand from shorts and spot interests with the general list ruling about six to twelve points net higher. Cotton futures closed steady. The market continued very steady during the middle of the day and prices ruled about five to ten points net high er on covering and a moderate trade demand. Local brokers said they found it easier to execute orders, which sug gested a somewhat broader market than earlier in the week. High. Low. Close. Dec. (old) 7.43 7.30 7.37 Jan. NEW ORLEANS COTTON Nsk Orleans. —Reports that German spinners were good buyers of March con tracts in the American markbts and unexpectedly small December tenders gave the market for cotton futures a firm tone today in the early trading and sent prices six to eight points over Wed nesday’s close. Weather conditions were considered damaging to cotton still left in the field. In the afternoon scalping songs went to taking profits and the market did not stand up under it. At 1:30 prices were at about the level of Wednesday’s close. Cotton futures closed steady, un changed to six points up net. Large exports gave the market added steadiness and by noon prices were nine to eleven points up, new style May showing the widest rise. High. Low. Close. Dec. (old) 7.26 7.24 7.28 Jan. New York.—The feature of the open ing was the better demand for Decem ber, this is attributed to the revision committee’s action on Wednesday rais ing the premium on high gVades. There were about 600 notices circulating. There was little or no demand for the new contracts, but for December Sohill, Hubbard, Hentz, Siedenburg and Gwatli mey were the principal buyers, while Cone, GeeV and Waters were sellers. Outside business continues very limited and until more interest is manifested in the market it is quite likely that the range of prices will be narrow. 1 New York. —The market is steady on buying by houses with German connec tions of late month and general short covering of December.
