WEEK IN COTTON
New York. —While business remained
generally quiet in the New York Cotton
market during the past week, prices
ruled steadier and during today's trad
ing December contracts sold at 7.43 or
58 points above the low level of Novem
ber 18th, and within 7 points of the
syndicate price of 7(4 cents. Later de
liveries also advanced on a little trade
buying and some investment demand,
while upward “tendency evidently was
encouraged by the Increasing export
movement and the steadiness of South
ern spot markets. Leading trade in
terests as well as Liverpool shorts were
buyers of December against sales of
later deliveries, and the first December
notices issued today were estimated at
only 700 bales although there are fully
40,000 bales certified in the local stock.
The talk has reflected no change of
sentiment with reference to size of the
crop. The census figures showing 11,*
• 624,708 bales ginned to November 14th,
were considered in line with estimates
cf something over 16.000,000 bales, in
cluding linters. Compared with Into
sight figures this report also Indicated
a record-breaking volume of cotton
available In the South. Local spot brok
ers claim that domestic spinners still
are buying only fVom hand to mouth in
the expectation that these supplies
eventually will become a pressure
against the market. The improving ex
port movement and the firmness shown
by Interior holders so far this season
have held sellers in check, however, and
spinners have been moderate buyers. Dl.
rect shipments to/lermany are expect
ed in the near fflture and German in
terests were reported to be inquiring for
cotton In the local market today.
