Paris.—Apparently the morals of some of the German troops is badly shaken, from the account of the sur render of a whole German detachment which was told here today. Desultory firing was going on near the Flanders seacoast when suddenly there appeared from the German trench nearest the Belgian line a long stick with a white handkerchief at tached to it. Fearing some treacherous move, the Belgians remained under cover of their trenches and waited for devel opments. A few minutes later, a sin gle German left the enemy trenches. He was unarmed, and began painfully to crawl the distance between his own and the Belgian lines. The Belgians allowed him to advance. Every now and again, he raised his arm, and waved a piece of paper he carried. In this w'ay it took him more than half an hour to cover the distance be tween the trenches. As soon as he reached the Belgian lines, an officer advanced and inquir ed his purpose. The German mutely held out his crumpled piece of paper and the officer read: Surrender. “Our captain wants to surrender with his 400 men, if you will prom ise that their lives will be safe,” “Why do you not want to go on fighting?” said the Belgian officer. “We are hungry,” was the reply. “Our trenches are practically swamp ed, we are up t( the waist in water. Your shells are continually falling among us. We would rather die and be done with it than go on with this war.” The officer saw that the offer of surrender was genuine, and that the soldier was perfectly livid and hip clothes were a mass of mud. Ac cordingly on the back of the scrap of paper the man had brought, he wrote: “If you come unarmed you have noth ing to fear.” The soldier took the paper, and began his painful return journey. More Comfortable. “Hurry up!" cried a Belgian soldier to him, it is more comfortable here than over there." The Belgians saw the German regain his trench, and then for half a” hour nothing hap pened. But suddenly along a front of 70 yards of German soldiers leaped up. The Belgians were in readiness to fire at the word of command; but the officer reassured them —not a single man of the advancing Germans were armed. They had come to ai r render everything in their attitude proved it. But they had not advanc ed fifty yards from their trenches, before a fierce fusilade broke out. The Germans halted and flung themselves face forward, to the ground. They explained later, that they at first thought it was the Belgians who were firing on them, but soon they ' realized that the bullets were coming from their own trenches. At this they lost their heads, and made a wild dash for the Belgian lines, which they reached only after considerable loss. 1D,100100,000 FIGURES WRONG U. S. That also was the maximum named by Sir George Paish the British treasury official, during his recent visit to this C °Loca"l bankers believed Lloyd-George probably referred to the amount of Am erican securities held by bankers and in dividuals of Great Britain.
