11. 5. ENVOY SAYS
STORY II FAKE
Destitution Great in Belgium
and No German General
Frankenberg Made Statement
Attributed to Him.
London, 3:40 p. mi —ln response to
an inquiry concerning the authenticity
of an interview published in English
and American newspaers, which credit
ed a German officer designated as Gen.
von Frankenberg with the statement
that Germany would have fed the peo
ple of Belgium if she had not been
anticipated by the kind-hearted action
of the American people, Brand Whit
lock, American minister to Belgium,
today sent the following telegram to
the American Relief (Tommission:
No Basie for It.
• “I am officially informed by the Ger
man government that there is no basis
in fact for the statements published
in the American and British press to
the effect that a General von Frank
enberg made the alleged statements.
"There is, indeed, no General von
Frankenberg at Antwerp but it seems
that a Captain von Frankenberg, a
staff officer not authorized to speak,
made statements to a person claiming
th be a newspaper man relating to
conditions in Germany. There was
no danger of starvation, he ’said, in
Germany, which needed no assistance
in feeding its population.
"His remarks, therefore, were en
tirely misunderstood.
As Represented.
"The German government renews its
i official declaration that conditions in
Belgium are as represented and views
with great gratification the generous
efforts of the American people to re
lieve the starving population there.
Without such assistance there must
be famine, and I again repeat my ex
pression of regret that cruelly reck
less statements should be allowed to
imperil the great work which the gen
erosity of the American people is car
rying on among a population so deep
ly in distress.”
