PHONE 1 296 NEW YORK COTTON New York. —There was a renewed in vestment demand combined with a lit tle trade buying in the cotton market today and after opening steady at a de cline of two points to an advance of four points active months worked a shade higher. Encouraging trade accounts from Manchester and talk for a further im provement in export demand probably encouraged scattering support of the late months while offerings were limited and there was not enough Southern sell ing here to suggest any material change in the spot situation. Further advances in ocean freight rates, while partly re flecting a reduction in available tonage ate also supposed to indicate a further improvement in the volume of interna tional trade and it is said that recent hedge selling here has been by exporters against their purchases rather than by Southern merchants. Trade buying which appeared to come largely from houses with German con nections gave the market a firm under tone later in the morning and the close was steady at a net advance of two to eight points. NEW ORLEANS COTTON New Orleans.—Better cables than ex pected put local prices of cotton up around the opening of the market today. Sellers of the earlier part of the week were inclined to even up and little short selling made its appearance. In the first half hour of business prices were five to seven points over yesterday’s close. The demands for covers from the short side increased and at 10:30 prices were nine points up. Mill takings thus far this season were estimated 3,365,000 bales against 5,506,000 a year ago and 4,- 987,000 two years ago. There were also advices that the weather in Argentina had become unsettled and was interfer ing with the success of the harvest. Realizing sales here by longs however, tended somewhat to restrict the ad •' tee. After opning %©% to %©%e l’ @her, the market showed a disposition tj react. Corn hardened with wheat. The open ing which was %®%c to %c higher, was followed by a slight further gain. Oats merely reflected the advance in other grain. Higher prices for hogs made the pro vision market firm.
