HOME EDITION VOLUME XIX, No. 340. MEMORIAL, DUD OF IDE MAINE After Years of Work, Finishing Touches Being Made---Dedi cation on February 15th Next Washington, D. C.—Only finishing touches were necessary today to com plete the Maine Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery to those who perish ed when the battleship Maine was blown up in Havana harbor in February, IS9S, After years of work the.memorial prac tical is ready for formal dedication on February 15th next, the 17th anniversary of the destruction of the Maine. The memorial was provided for by act of congress. The most striking feature of the me morial is the mainmast of the Maine it self as »t stood on the ship. The mast stands erect from a granite from base constructed in the form of a Mausoleum and which has the contour and effect of a battleship. The base is fourteen feet high and its diameter 26 feet. In panels on the outer walls of the mausoleum are the names of those who went dow*n when the Maine was destroyed. The me morial will be dedicated with appro priate ceremonies. The tentative pro gram includes addresses by President Wilson. Secretary Daniels, and Rear Ad miral C. D. Sigsbee. U.S.N.. retired, who commanded the Maine as well as a mil itary and naval demonstration. FIGHT OVER PIG IN RAIN GULLETS French Soldiers, Different Companies, Argue Over Ownership of “Squeeler” Re gardless of Shrapnel. Paris.—A picturesque story comes from the Woevre. An artilleryman in a letter from a village near Verdun, says: The Germans are in the woods and they are as reluctant as carrion crows to leave. They have wound barbed wire round the trees and concealed broken glass under the freshly-fallen leaves. They have even gone one bet ter. Collecting the Lebel rifles taken on the battlefield they have buried them vertically, leaving about six inch- ! es of bayonet protruding. If we try to penetrate the undergrowth we run ' the risk of impaling ourselves on our j own Lebels. Rough luck—what? “Very little scares us nowadays hast night we heard heavy footsteps an odd noise like patapoum. Was it a batch of German deserters coming to us, or our outposts returning with some warning? I peered into the dark ness and within a few feet of my head' was a fat pig. He was more frightened than I, and decamped. We followed, and in five minutes Mr. Cochon was tied to the wheel of an ammunition cart. He grunted all night tong, “Next morning men from the neigh borhood battery heard of our inter esting capture and claimed it as theirs What cheek! We squabbled and ev erybody asserted his right to the pris oner. Suddenly shrapnel began to fall In the midst of the debate. Did Prus- | sian shells stop the row over that pig? No, sir, for ten more minuteA the twc batteries argued, while bullets flew and the pig squealed. "The chef of a portable kitchen had his little joke. ‘How polite the boches ' are,’ said he. ‘They even send us their marmites (black Marias) in which to cook our puddings.’ Then along came the captain. In the name of heaven, he exclaimed, get hack to ] your 75's. Cut the pig in two. A ■ military Solomon had solved the dif ficulty, and both battalions had pork j tor supper that night. TENDERING OF FIRST VICTORIA CROSS IN THIS WAR • London. How the first Victoria cross to be won in the war came to Sergeant-Major White, A. S. C., has just been told by that gallant officer, as follows: "We got orders at 3:15 at night to move to convoy in charge of a captain. We had not gone far before we ran into an ambush of Uhlans, who gave it to us hot. We were outnumbered and I have a distinct recollection of hav ing to go at five with my sword and accounting for them. But we had to retire. When we reached a place where we could pull ourselves to gether an officer asked if anyone had seen the captain. On hearing that he had been shot down I said I would go back for him, and went back and found him lying on the field where we had the scrap. I picked him up, put him across my horse and galloped back to safety, with bullets whistling round. I was hit in both legs, and one stm has a bullet in it.” Beginning as a private, White re ceived the distinguished conduct medal and was made a corporal for carrying Lieutenant Roberts, mortally wound ed, from the danger zone at Colenso, in doing which he was hit by a bul let near the spine. Now his gallantry Le Cateau has brought him V. ('. He is 85 years old and after the Boer war served 1t years in India, leaving the army only when one month be fore the present war broke out. Reinlisting. White fought at Mons and on the Marne and Alsne. He Is at Cardiff now, where he is about to have the bullet extracted from his leg. Besides the two decorations men ( tinned White has also the South Af rican and Northwest Frontier medals. RATE SUSPENDED.
