VOICES OF THE WORLD.
“There are so many voices in the
vorld. The women in the factories,
he pirls we heard about last night,
.re not getting a square deal. If you
isten you will hear the voices of toil
ng little children calling out to you
tnd me. Good men are doing much,
jut if good women with political
power stood by those sad-eyed chil
dren, they would learn to play like
yours and mine.
“Our hands are powerless to right
the wrong. Today our ears are deaf
ened by the roar of cannon and burst
ing shell. Dying men, suffering wo
men, crying children, are calling. And
all that women can do is to pass res
olutions and make bandages to try to
cure the evils they could have pre
vented. . , .
‘|‘lf the voices of women had been
heard in the counsels of the nations
there would have been no war.” Mrs.
De Rivers in Woman’s Journal.
DICKENS FOR CHILDREN.
Kate Dickinson Sweetser, author of
“Ten Boys from Dickens," replied to
a question as to how she happened
to write this hook that “it was really
and truly only a ‘happy pen.’ When
I was thirteen years old I was a
Dickens enthusiast, and especially
fond of Paul Dombey, Oliver Twist.
The Marchioness, and all the other
famous Dickens children, hut 1 had
no one to talk them over with, as any
girl and boy friends did not know
any of them and had no interest in
reading the books they lived in, al
though when l told them parts of the
stories their interest was keen. Final
ly I exclaimed: ‘I am going to make
you know them! I will pull all the
boys and girls he ever created out of
his novels and make their lives into
stories in a separate book all by them
selves. It wont' be Sweetser, cither.
It will Just be Dickens, but you will
have to read it because I made the
book myself Just for you.’ ”
CHURCH SUFFRAGE
WON BY WOMEN. .
The annual convention of the Epis
copal convention of the Episcopal
church in the diocese of New \ork
has voted to give women suffrage in
church government. Since the state
law regarding religious coporatlons
is so framed that it Interferes with the
granting of this privilege, a resolution

was adopted empowering Bishop Greer
to appoint a committee of three to do
all that is necessary to arrange for
votes for women in church matters.
The Episcopal church is following the
example set by the Representative
Council of the Church of England,
which gave women the vote in all
church matters last July.
Woman, for the first time in the
history of the Protestant Episcopal
Church, It is said, was recognized this
week on one of the important boards
of the denomination, when the synod
of the third province in session in
Pittsburg decided that the provincial
board of social service shall here
after be composed of one bishop, four
presbyters, four laymen and two wo
men.
MANNERS INDOORS
AND OUTDOORS.
Just as thfe well drilled soldier is
finer than the raw recruit, so is the
cultivated person trained in observ
ing each law adopted in social life
which distinguishes him from the un
cultivated. Correct attitudes in stand
ing, walking and sitting can not be
learned without practice. There will
be no grace in standing if the body
sinks back on the heels, or the shoul
ders are stooping, or the chest sinks,
in, or the chin is poked forward.
Standing is merely an Interrupted
step. To walk well there must be
evenness of motion, with smooth, reg
ular steps. There should be no Jerk
ing, mincing steps, no long strides.
The foot Is placed almost straight,
turned slightly outward. It is awk
ward to turn the feet In and very had
form to spread the feet out. The
arms should fall easily, the elbows
being near the body. To swing the
arms is not good form.
There are certain essential things
to remember about behavior. It Is
I extremely rude to yawn without mak
ing some effort to suppress It or with
out concealing the mouth, to whistle
or hum, to make monotonous noises
with the hands or feet, to fidget about
in a chair, to pick up paper, knives
or other articles and play with them
when talking, to sit or stand opposite
a mirror and look at one’s self while
l talking, to whisper or hide the mouth
i with the hand while speaking, to point
at any one thing, or to lounge any
' where In the presence of guests.

John Bunny in Silk Stockings Monday at Kelly’s
Not in motion pictures or life play, but John in plaster cast in his famous pose, “I should worry.” John’s a
sort of a silent partner here of good old Santa Claus, and We’ve arranged a throne on a huge center table,
surrounded by silk stockings, where John sits, monarch of all he surveys, where you can detect, intermingled
with that I should worry countenance, "Home ain’t anything like this;" I think I’ll take off my coat and hat
and stay awhile. John says somebody’s got to preside at the Hosiery Table, and that a promise of a well-filled
stocking demauds the right sort of a stocking, and, as everybody knows that Kelly’s Stockings will stand for be
ing well fiiled, this is the logical place to buy those Xmas Hose. Hook this list over carefully, (’ome and
