Public Mind
(Th* Herald welcomes contributions
to the "Public Mind” column. In fact
it is a column for the people to speak
their mind on every question of pub
lic interest. However, the editor of
this column -equests that contributors
make their communications to the
point, fi half dozen short communi
cations are worth a great deal more
anyway than one a column in length.
One can say a great deal in a dozen
or more lines and in a quarter of a
column can almost write a history.

SALE OF FIREWORKS.
To The Herald:
A discussion is now in progress by
the people of this community for pro
hibiting the sales and explosion of
fireworks In Augusta.
A certain gentleman has remarked
that they are expensive.
This may he the case hut neverthe
less If the people of Augusta could af
ford to spend $9,000 in seeing a circus
as they did on October 10th last and
considering the fact that this enor
mous amount of money was removed
from the city upon the departure of
that circus the children of Augusta
should he afforded the pleasure of ex
ploding fireworks this Xmas, thus pat
ronizing the home merchant.
Has there been any serious fires that
have resulted from fireworks.
To my knowledge there has not
been
Neither have any fatalities . resulted
from these combustibles.
The explosion of fireworks could he
confined to a certain portion of the
city designated by law so as to ex
clude the business section of the city
where cotton is stored thus less en
dangering this product of the farmer,
anil not fully prohibiting these com
bustibles.
(Signed) STANLEY RIDDELL.
HE WILL REMAIN BACHELOR.
To The Herald:
Bachelor, I am thinking will remain
a bachelor for many years hence, to
my opinion he is in search of a slave,
and lucky married man I am sure if
he loved his wife as he should he
would he more considerate of her than
to leave his clothes lying on the floor
for wify to gather up. There are many
other ways in which a wife can prove
her love for her husband. I have been
a wife for the past three years and
have never had an occasion to gather
up rny husband's clothes from the floor,
shine Ids shoes, nor clean and press his
clothes and I know I love him as de
votedly as woman can love.

THE GOVERNOR
IN FRANK CASE
Pressure Being Brought on
Slaton Through the Mails
Already. Convicted Man's
Only Hope.
Atlanta, Ga. Already enormous press
ure Is being brought to bear on Governor
John M. Slaton seeking to influence him
In the appeal which shortly will be
presented him by I .on M. Frank, who
lost his final hope for .1 court review
when the United States supremo court
.wslerdav declined to pe un't the Prank
"tit to come before It. There are hun
dieds of letter-writers, all ove- the coun
try, flooding the mall with letters to the I
governor, some urging him to pardon
Frank because he Is Innocent, others
equally Inslsttent that the convicted man
should he given the extreme penalty of
the law.
Governor Slaton's statement to the re
porters today gave them the Idea that
n reprieve for Frank, should he he sen
tence for an tarty execution, la not un
likely. The governor merely reiterated
what he said In New York, that he la
familiar with the case only In a general
way, cannot pass upon It until he Is
thoroughly familiar with the record, and
expects to give It n complete Investiga
tion. As the record Is extremely vol
numinous the governor could hardly read
It Inside a month.
Frank expressed little emotion when
the news was broken to hi lie Baid
ho had no statement to make.
Frank probably will he brought before
Judge 11t II tomorrow to hear for the
third time the sentence of death. Only
the prison commission and the governor
now stand betwen him and the gallows.
