When Commander Courtney and other
officials from the Jason came ashore

NEW CHAPTER IK
WAR'S HORRORS
Mental Maladies Being Treat
ed. Bad Effects of Long
Drawn Out Modern Battle.
Berlin. The military medical au
thorities made preparations at the
outbreak of the war for treating; men
tal maladies caused by terrors of bat
tle. It had shown by the Russo-Jap
anese war that the effect of the long
drawn out modern battle, with its ter
rible and incessant roar of artillery,
was in a high degree unfavorable on
the minds of the combatants and the
record of mental derangements caused
by the battles in the far East opened
a new chapter in the horrors of war.
In anticipation that similar results
would follow the present war the Ger
man authorities established at Strass
burg a special hospital for the treat
ment of diseases of the mind caused
by battle.
One of the physicians attached to
this hospital has just given, in the
Munich Medical "Weekly, some of his
observations during the first weeks of
the war. He found that mental dis
orders manifested themselves among
the Alsatian population even during
the period of mobilization, when tho
terror of being arrested as a spy was
ever present with many persons. Still
greater have been the numbers of
persons who lost their mental balance
through the terrors of battle and espe
cially through long continued fatigue.
AT THE BIJOU
“Lost in a Fog,” an extemely funny
musical comedy, presented by the
Gardner-Lawson Musical Comedy Co.,
drew r the crowds to the Bijou yester
day in the afternoon and at night. .Tust
shows what a good company can do.
Ask anyone who saw the Bijou's show
yesterday. See if he doesn’t say it
was good—excellent.
There have been lots of comedies
shown at the Bijou but none so en
tirely entertaining every minute as that
of Monday and Tuesday.
The company changes its hill after
tonight.
"Wednesday and Thursday it will he
"The Black Bird.” with also a change
in the moving pictures. All three reels
will he new—never seen here before.
Why the picture program alone Is a
show in itself.
The last tw»o days of the week the
company will present "The Inventor,”
and next week there will he another
good company at the Bijou, making
three complete changes during the six
days.
AT THE STRAND
“Atlantis,” a $75,000,00 picture, Is be
ing presented at the Strand today and
this evening only, and the prices re
main the same as; usual. This is said
to be one of the most gigantic photo
productions ever exhibited, and every
where it has been shown has drawn
great crowds. It is from the dramati
zation of the famous novel by Gerhart
Happmann.
Tomorrow Augustans will delight in
having the oportunlty of witnessing
Jack London’s “Valley of the Moon.”
It is a picture of special interest and
timeliness, made under the direction
of Hobard Bosworth.
First, it is Mr. London’s most popu
lar book, going into several editions
within a month of its publication.
Thousands of readers of the story will
want to see the film version, which
was made with Mr. London’s collabora
tion, and follows the book closely. The
play may honestly be advertised as one
of Mr. London’s most charming stories,
which none of his followers should
miss.
Then, the play itself possesses all the
elements of a successful release. It
has punch, thrill, a beautiful love story,
is acted by a strong cast of screen
favorites, was directed by Hobart Bos
worth, and photographed by George
W. Hill.
In writing the hook, Mr. London’s
motive was to show, by means of the
exquisite love story of Billy and Sax
on, and the obstacles they encountered,
how the open air calls every man and
woman and how In the country, in the
heart of nature herself, they can find
the happiness and companionship that
city life makes so difficult. This is
beautifully brought out In the play.
Billy and Saxon,'after facing poverty
and unhappiness In the city, start out,
tramping the country, looking for a
home. We follow them through vari
ous charming experiences, and Inci
dentally see a good deal of lovely
scenery and glimpses of California’s
beauties, until at Sonoma, an Indian
name, meaning. “The Valley of the
Moon,” they find a place to settle
down.
