1046 Broad Street. Augusta, Ga.
mantling the seventh nrmy; General
von Zwohl nnd who captured Mau
beuge. and General von Ummlch, con
queror of Idogs and Namur.
Several hours were spent In tho
trenches in a picturesque old town,
where German riflemen and French
ieglonaira play lrrlm practical Jokes
of war upon each other from frosl
tions a scant 20) yards apart. Men,
horses, supplies and hospitals were
housed In hillside caverns, formerly
stone quarries absolutely protected
from even the most powerful shell
fire.
Blackened by Fire.
The morning was passed In an ar
tillery observation stand oposlte
rthelms whore a powerful telescope
through which the fire of the artillery
is directed, brought the observer
within a hundred yards of the city
and the cathedral and enabled him to
see that the cathedral and Its towers
were standing fairly Intact, although
blackened by fire.
Inspection was made of a labyrinth
of field fortifications approaches along
the Alsne at ItH nearest Joint to Paris,
where the lines are normally two or
three hundred yards apart. The sol
diers, even In the foremoßt trenches
were living In comparative comfort.
In Good Spirits.
They are vedl supplied with blan
kets. food, water and clothing and are
In good spirits. Desultory Infantry
fire always is in progress here and
occasionally the rattle of machine
guns break out. The artillery on both
sides has thrown tons of Iron dally
but there have been no great fights
oJ late herj abouts.
Of all the Impressions of the trip
one of the most striking is that left
by the countless stacks of unthresh
ed grain stretching for miles In every
direction throughout tills granury of
northern France. More than 100 Ger
man threshing machines are working
in the region occupied by the army
The army not only Is living on sup
plies of flour and meat derived from
Ibis section of the country, but actual
ly Is sending wheat and flour back to
Germany.
Smiling and Well Fed.
The German soldiers at the front is
smiling and well fed. The lean grey
hounds see.ii after the dash on Paris
are again rounding out Into portly
Germans.
The normal soldier at tho front does
not sinß: as much as formerly, partly
perhaps because he tuis sung himself
out and partly because singing in the
Immediate vicinity of the enemy is apt
to draw fire, hut lie Is neither dis
couraged nor exhausted. There is no
Indication that his nerves
are breaking under the strain.
Health conditions are remarkably
good, the surgeons state. There has
been much typhoid, hut this now is
well in hand owing to the vigorous
use of the anti-typhoid serum. The
medical department Is cleaning out
three villages in the Immediate vi
cinity of headquarters which were
found to be typhoid centers. Tho sur
geons are isolating or vaccinating the
inhabitants of suspected villages.
Winter Crops.
The Germans evidently are prepar
ing for an extended occupation. The
French peasants under the supervision
and to a certain extent the mild com
pulsion of the Germans, have planted
winter crops nnd are working in the
fields. Important bridges destroyed
are everywhere being permanently re
built with steel from Germany. The
roads are being maintained as usual
by French labor and In some cases
iactortes are being re-opened.
Mrs. McClsin’s Experience With Croup.
"When my boy. Ra>, was small he
was subject to croup, and I was al
ways alarmed at such times. Cham
berlain's Cough Remedy proved far
better than any other for this trouble.
It always relieved him quickly. 1 am

know It Is a positive cure for croup,"

AT THE STRAND
A drama of tangled lives, Inter
woven with the mist of the sea—
" Hearts Adrift”—ls the picture show
ing today at The Strand, with Mary
Plckford In a tragic rola, softened
by her bewitching portrayal.
Mary Plckford—merely the mention
ing of her mime brings crowds after
crowds to any picture in which she is
playing. She Is truly "everybody’s
favorite."
Miss rMckford Is presented in this
tragic epic by Mr. I'anlel Frohmau
anil takes n distinctly new role from
any In which she hns been seen here
before.
The ending of the picture-play Is
extremely tragic, for, as the story goes,
"when Graham at last turns to look for i
Nina he sees her poised upon the brow ;
of a cliff, her babe In her arms. Only
a moment she stands there, and then
leaps to death.
Tomorrow.
Remember, tomorrow. The Strand
will show the greatest living detec
tive, Wm. J. Burns. In "The 15,000,000
Counterfeiting Plot,” a six-part pic
ture of 600 scenes. Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle also appears In this photo
drama. and It Is absolutely the first
lime that the greatest writer of de
tective fiction and the world-famous
secret sendee msn have ever been
presented together.
PLANT A FIELD OF RAPE NOW.

us appreciate at Its full value, and to
which we would do well to give more
attention, not only as a feed for hogs,
but as a source of green feed for all
livestock. Including chickens, and the

From time to time we have called
