NEW YORK COTTON
New York.—There were comparatively
few sellers in the cotton market at the
opening today and first prices were
steady at an advance of one to two
points on continued steadiness of Liver
pool. There was probably some scat
ered covering for over the week-end.
while there also appeared to be a mod
erate demand for October from commis
sion house sources and the market Work
ed up two ov three points from the
initial figures during early trading. Near
months were neglected.
The Ve-ppening of the stock market
was taken as a further indication of
improving general conditions and prob
ably inspired some Wall street buying.
Buying became rather more active later
with the close very steady at a net ad
vance of nine to t hirteen-points.

NEW ORLEANS COTTON
New Orleans.—Week-end covering of
shorts steadied the future market to
day and brought about an advance of
four to five points in the early trading.
Cables were better than due and traders
were impressed by the size of the export
movement.
Cess pessimistic reports from
terior regarding spots, almost an entire
absence of liquidation and hedge selling
and a scattered demand for investment
were sustaining influences - hich caused
the market to close firm at the highest
of the day, a net gain of seven to nine
points.
Cotton futures closed firm at a net

111 Business Days.
New York. —Wall street came into its
own today. The Stock Exchange, dosed
for nearly four and a half months ex

the past two weeks, was re-opened at
10 o’clock this morning for active trad

two issues were approved by the gover
nors for trading and though other is
sues were barred, notably United States
Steel, activity on the floor of the ex
change revived memories of big days ten
years ago.
New York.—Open trading in shares
was resumed on the Stock Exchange to
day after an Interval of 111 business
days. The tone of the initial trading
was strong but indicated a degree of
caution by buyers and selleif. The first
quotation was 10 shares of Pittsburg
Coal which declined (4- This wag fol
lowed by transactions of 100 to 300
shares in some of the more active is
sues including St. Paul, Missouri Pacific,
Lehigh Valley, Reading, American Can,

block of .1,400 shares of Reading. Among
the early declines were Southern Rail
way, common and preferred, which lost
I*4 and 4*4, and Northern Pacific, which
yielded %. Secondary prices showed
some recessions from the opening after
the first ten minutes.
Closed strong. There were many ad
ditions to the opening gains in the later
dealings, which were on a more active
basis, Reading, most prominent feature
of the railway list, increased its lead to
over eight points and Lehigh Valley to
twelve points. St. Paul rose 5% and
Northern Pacific, after some early weak
ness, advanced almost three points, with
a gain of elevent points for Peoples
Gas.
Some of the specialties including
Texas Company, General Motors and
Central Leather increased their. Initial
advances, while other cpeciaJtles like
