WEEK IN COTTON
New York.—The government's esti
mate Indicating the largest cotton crop
in the history of trade was followed by
lower prlcee In the tnarkst tills week.
The official forecnat of 15,96#,000 ha U s
excluding llntera wa« several hundred
thousand baler above average expecta
tlona which had been reduced somewhat
by comparatively light ginning returna
for the period between Not ember 14th
and December lrt This falling off In
ginning operations bad led some to sup
pose that fully the average per centago
of the rrop had been ginned before the
beginning of thla month but according
to the government'a estimate unices it
I* a <|ueetlon of average hale weights,
the proportion ginned to December lit
thtr year does not seem to have been
more than 8:' comparing with 85.6. the
average for the three preceding year*.
The comparatively small ginning for
the last half of November is therefore
attributed to the unfavorable w either
conditions and the estimate wa* gen.
craJly conatrued as pointing to a prob
able total growth, Including llnters of
from 1# #06.90 nto 17.090.e00 liates. or
fully half a million hales In excess of
the previous record. Such figures nat
ura ly suggested a Urge surplus to he
carried forward Into next season, hut
ideas of trade takings have Increased
aoinexvhat reeently and the estimate hit
exerted much less Influence at prices
believed to he alrady undtfr tht average
cost of production.
The talk around the ring, however
bas shown » more bearish average of
sentiment owing to ipptehenslona that
the big figures would shake the deter
mination of Southern holders and lead
to Increased offerings, while at the »»me
time they would encourage buyers In a
po Icy of procrastination Trading hat
been more actlvt In the decline of about
$! 50 to $3 00 per bale from the recent
high levels and while there has been
moderate selling of near .montha the
market has received xvpport or a scs'e
down from trade Interest* and Investors

New Orleans.—The cotton market
maintained a very good tone throughout
todav’s session, closing firm at a net
gain for the day of seven to nine points.
While the demand was only moderate,
coming principally from shorts who
wanted to realize profits. It was more
than the ring could supply,
Idxports were large enough to attract
pnrticul if attention and they resulted In
some bluing for Investment, Total ship
ments from till ports for the day were far
111 excess of receipts, shipments he
ir g 79,437. bales and receipts 62.780. Of
the shipments 62,163 bales were for for
eign countries. Exports for the season
were brought up to 1.802,831 bales.
Spot markets were generally steadier
with telegrams from the tntifrlor claim
ing that farmers were offering less cot
ton than since Thursday, when the gov
ernment's estimate of the crop made a
bearish Impression on spot owners.

UHLAN LANCE CUT ABCESS !
FROM FRENCHMANS LIVER j
Par's.—The chief of a battalion of
rolonial infantry tells of this remark
able incident:
“Before the war broke out I suffered
from an abscess of the liver that was
so placed that the doctors said an
operation would he too dangerous. 1
had before me the little comforting
thought that I should have to live
with that abscess as long as it would
let me. With this prospect in view,
It did not cost me any effort at all to
summon the courage to wade into the
Germans.
"One day we fell upon a band of
Uhlans; we landed every one of them,
but, in the melee, the point of a lance
put me on my back with a wound
that I thought would finally end my
sufferings. They carried me to the
ambulance and a surgeon began to
investigate the wound. 'What was
that you had inside of you, anyway?'
he asked. 'Whatever it was, that
Uhlan has burst it.' The lance had
pierced the abscess and roughly per-,
formed, with success, the operation
that the surgeon dreaded, and now 1
am almost ready to go back to the
front”
