MONDAY, DECEMBER 14 PHONE I 296 NEW YORK_COTTON New York. —Cotton’s steadier tone which developed Saturday was in evi dence again early today. Cables were better than due and after opening steady at unchanged prices to an advance of five points the local market sold about six to ten points higher on continued covering and trade or investment buying. There were a few December notices in circulation but little scattering liquida tion was readily absorbed and the near months led the early advance, on the larger English spot sales, continued talk of increasing exports and the absence of sufficient Southern hedge selling to sug gest any material change In the interior spot markets. Trading was quiet later in the morn ing. but prices ruled generally steady and about six to eight points net higher. Reports of steadier Southern spot markets and the steady ruling of New Orleans helped to sustain prices in a very quiet market here during the mid dle of the afternoon with active months 'rilling some seven to eight points net higher. Half an hour after the opening prices were five points over Saturday's close. At a level five to six points up, fresh selling met the market and at noon the trading months stood at a net advance of oniy one point. In the afternoon heavy shipments stimulated the demand and at 1:30 prices were nine to ten points over Saturday’s closing level. The general rise which marked resumption of operations was continued though fewer Issues were traded In during the first half hour. During that period trading was limited to the copper group, which rose 1 to 2% points. Reading, Lehigh Valley, Erie and St. Paul also materially extended Saturday's gains. Atchison and Penn sylvania were among the few prominent issues to show hesitation. The move ment pointed to an accumulation of week-end buying orders, together with a further covering of short contracts. Although business dwindled In the early afternoon prices continued to ad vance under the lead of Amalgamated and the better known railroad securi ties. The closing was strong. There were some recessions In special stocks sub jected to selling pressure, but elsewhere further Improvement was noted.
