New Orleans.—Cotton opened today
with a pronounced holiday feeling.
On the call prices were a point lower
but afterwards, in spite of news of na
val engagements in the North Sea and
the bombardment of the English coast
by German vessels they rase three
points.
The market had a steady tone
throughout the morning session and at
noon stood ten points up from the
lowest. •

NEW YORK STOCK MARKET
New York. —Reactionary tendencies
were again uppermost at the opening of
today’s stock market, the international
list evincing greatest weakness. Union
Pacific, Southern Pacific, Canadian Pa
cific, St. Paul, United States Lteel and
Smelting soon fell under yesterdays
lowest quotations. Baltimore and Ohio
also shared in the declining movement
together with Reading and some less
prominent stocks. Fractional gains were
scored by some of the coppers but Amal
gamated pursued an uneven course.
Prices strengthened on moderate buying
orders but the undertone continued un
certain.
During the early afternoon there was
little change from the dullness, except
that prices held more steady. New
Haven and Missouri Pacific were high
er, while Baltimore and Ohio and Read
ing drooped. Specialties like Central
Heather and Beet Sugar were up one to
two points.
CHICAGO GRAIN MARKET
Chicago, Ills.—Wheat showed an un
usual degree of steadiness. Opened %c
off to %c up, declined moderately all
around, then held at the same as last
night to Vic below.
Demand from feeders helped corn.
Opened firm '4c decline to Vic advance
followed by prices all around slightly
above yesterday's close.
Oats averaged slightly firmer with
coi*.
Higher bog quotations carried pro
visions upgrade but the market sagged
on lack of demand.
Subsequently big export clearances
and diminishing receipts acted to some
extent as an offset for heaviness. Closed
steady at % to %c net decline.
Afterward corn was inclined to ease
off with wheat. Closed steady but %
to %®V4c under last night.
