NEW YORK COTTON New York.—Cotton was quiet during today's early trading and the small busi ness seemed to be chiefly in the way of evening up accounts for over Sunday and fctr the Census ginning report expected Monday. Cables were lower than due. After opening at a decline of two to six points in sympathy, prices here ruled steady on scattered covering probably inspired by reports of a continued active demand for ocean tonnage, indications of an im proving demand at the decline in the do mestic goods market and the steady showing of the Southern spot markets. New York.—Early trading in the cot ton market today consisted chiefly of evening up on both sides. Cables were not as good as due, but they caused a depression of only one point on the call after which prices went a point over yesterday’s close. Cotton closed steady. , After selling about five to eight points net higher on covering, trade and invest ment buying the market eased off slight ly under realizing but closed steady and from two to four points net higher. NEW YORK STOCK MARKET New York. —Price changs in touay’s early dealings suggested that yesterday s inter-state commevce commission’s de cision had sp-nt its force, for a time at least. Tlie opening was exceedingly narrow with a light volume of business. Canadian Pacific and Its subsidiary “soo" were prominent for one point ad vances, with two points for Delaware and Hudson. These were partly offset by fractional declines in some of the better known shaves. By the end of the first half hour a firmer tendency was noted. Trading dragged along foV the re mainder of the session, the market de veloping no especial feature. The over turn was the smallest of any day since resumption of operations, many specula tive shares being unquoted. Closed ir regular.
