“White” Davis Re-elected
Captain For Next Year. Many
Prominent Alumni Made
After-Dinner Speeches.
The alumni of the Academy of Rich
mond county gave their annual banquet
on Monday night at the Hotel Genesta.

About fifty covers were laid and the af
fair was an immense success from every'
point of view. Several very distinguish
ed after-dinneir speakers were among
the alumni present who vied with each
other in praising the noble work of the
1914 football team who have so signally
covered themselves with glory this sea
son in winning the High School champ
ionship of Georgia.
At the banquet, next year's captan was
elected, or rather, re-elected, in the per
son of "White” Davis, who led the
team to theiv triumph this year, one of
the finest all-round young players and
most efficient high school captains in
the South. Davis will have many a
university after him when his time
conies to go on to the higher halls of
learning.
The toastmaster of the occasion was
Mr. Clarence Levy, who introduced Maj.
George P. Butler, principal of the Acad
emy. to make the opening talk. Major
Butler was strong in his praise of the
work done during the past year by the
team, both on the gridiron and in the
class-room, and heartily endorsed the
re-election of "White” Davis to the
captaincy. He spoke with enthusiasm
anent the proposed installation of a gym
nasium in the Academy, which he Sair
was a vital necessity to the school.
Speeches were made by Superintendent
Lawton B. Evans, Mr. James M. Hull,
I Jr. Mr. Sam Myers, Mr. Inman Curry,
Mr. Lansing Lee, and Dr. Houston,
every one of whom is an alumnus of the
institution.
Coach John Wilson made an interest
ing talk on the subject of the next sea
son’s financial prospects.

Chicago.—President Weeghman of
the Chicago Federals announced yes
terday he had submitted to his coun
sel the case of Walter Johnson, who
Saturday signed with his old team,
the Washington Americans, after hav
ing recently accepted a contract with
the Federals.
"Walter Johnson will play with the
Chicago Federals next year or not at
all.” said AVeeghman.
“The highest legal talent in the
country has declared that our con
tract with Johnson is binding," lie
added.

Forces Formed at Spartan
burg. Urge State-wide Bill.
Spar anburg. S. C. —There was a union
of forces of the advocates of the state
wide prohibition here last night and the
result is a solid front with harmony
throughout, according to a statement
giver, out after a lengthy conference be
tween members of the headquarters
committee of the Anti-saloon League
and a de egation of the league.
As a result of the meeting a motion
was made by the Rev. J. L. Harley that
a committee of ten be appointed, com
posed of five members fVom the head
quarters committee of the Anti-saloon
League and five others to meet in C?o

the legislature to press the passage of a
state-wide prohibition law to he ratified
in a state election, the election to be
held during the year 1915, and that the
headquarters committee of the Anti-sa
loon League he requested to have the
bill drafted and in Yeadiness to be pre
sented to the legislature, in the mean
time petitions be cireu’ated throughout
the stae.

young white man working at Pamola
cotton mills here, choked his wife to
death yesterday afternoon while in a
room with her alqpe. Tolbert seemed
utterly indifferent to the crime and ask
ed that the sheriff he sent for himself
and the undertaker for his wife’s body

ball team of the American School of
Osteopathy of Kirksville, Missouri,
has come all the way to Augusta to play
the local Y. M. C. A. Well the ex
planation is this: The Kirksville team
is playing games throughout thd south
visiting Atlanta, Augusta and a great
many other cities.

HAS NEW COLLEGE RULING
New York. —In an opinion announced
today Justice Bartow S. Weeks, a
chairman of the executive committee
of the Aamateur Athletic Union has
declared that athletes of any college
holding membership in any associa
tion of the Amateur Athletic Union
are eligible to represent a club during
the period between June Ist and Octo
ber Ist. Early In November Colum
bia University joined the Metropolitan
Association in order to permit its
athletes to compete in the association
