Why It’s a Crime to
“Shop For Fun”
Merchants in all the big cities de
clare there is a constantly increasing
number of women who have so much
spare time on their hands that they
make a practice of shopping idly, hour
after hour, from one store to another,
selecting goods which they have no
intention whatever of buying.
In an afternoon one such woman
jpill often order hundreds of dollars
worth of merchandise, knowing full
well that she will send it back to the
Store as soon as it is delivered at her
home. Occasionally a woman probab
ly does this in order to create an lm-

MEN’S TOGGERY
The stream that brings us the newest and best
things in Men’s Haberdashery never stagnates.
For the smartest Shirt, the choicest Tie, the correct
thing in Gloves, or for anything that’s “the thing” in
Men’s Toggery, come here.
Into this store is always a flow of the brightest and
newest of correct things in Men’s dress requisites.
That is why so many of the younger men in town
trade here, and why we’re looked upon to set the pace
in Men’s wearables.

presslon of oppulenee with her friends,
but usually it is only to gratify an
Idle whim or to pass a few hours, for
which she can think of no better use.
This practice of using the stores and
shops as places of amusement rather
than of business is one that is posi
tively wicked In its consequences to
the merchants and their salespeople.
The merchant suffers from the loss
entailed in the damage that often oc
curs to the goods while in the hands
of the purchaser, as well as from the
loss arising from the cost of delivering
and bringing back this merchandise.
He also suffers from the lost time of
the sales persons who make the sales
and the lost time of all other employes
of the store who handle the goods be
fore they are sent out.
But it is salesmen and women to
whom those who shop "Just for fun”
do the greatest injury.
In most stores the wages of those
who do the selling are based on a cer
tain percentage of the value of the
goods they sell. Thus when, a sales
girl gives two hours or so to waiting
on a woman who is shopping "Just for
fun,” and will return the goods she
orders sent C. O. D., she is suffering a
serious financial loss Not only does
her record for that period show no
profit to her employer, but during the

time wasted in this way she might
have made a number of sales, which
would have helped materially to se
cure her an Increase In salary.
It is no exaggeration to say that in
some of the New York stores the re
turns run as high as 26 per cent, the
great bulk of whicli Is made up of
goods returned for no better reason
than that the customer never did want
them. With the salary of the sales
person based on the amount of her
sales, this means that her possible
earnings are reduced one-fourth by
these returns. This Is a serious thing,
and it should he pressed home on the
women who are in the habit of shop
ping for fun, or who order things sent
to their homes simply to Impress some
companion with her financial stand
ing.
The merchant Is powerless to pre
vent this injustice. Present-day com
petition will admit only of payment of
salaries on such percentage basis as
will allow him to compete with other
merchants. Nor can he refus to ac
cept the illegitimate return of mer
chandise unless the other merchants
Join him. The whole matter Is one of
educating the public, principally the
women, as to why they should not re
turn goods. They should he shown
how the workers are directly injured
by the practice and, in a spirit of char
ity, if no other will prevail, they should
he asked not to amuse themselves at
the expense of the store's employes.
If such an appeal has no weight with
the women who shop "Just for fun," It
is suggested that they should tie ap
oaled to from the standpoint of hy
giene. It should he an easy matter
to convlnee any sensible woman that.
It is Impossible for a store to offer Im
maculate merchandise when so much
o' it is handled, mussed up and soiled
through the abuse of the return priv
ilege.
