Turning Point of Russian Campaign
In Poland, With Capture of Lodz,

Russian Lines in Northern Poland Rested on That City For

of Reserves Saved Their Retreat
Lodz, Russian Poland. Monday, Dec.
21 —(By Automobile Courier to Posen,
Prussia, Dec. 23, London, Dec. 24, 11
a. m.) —The capture of Lodz, accord
ing to a declaration made today by
General von Hindenburg, German
commander to a correspondent of The
Associated Press, was the turning
point of the campaign in Foland.
Russian lines in northern Poland
rested on that city for the possession
of which there occurred the most bit
ter struggle of the entire war on this
front. After the Russians following a
most obstinate resistance on their
part, were forced to evacuate the
town, a general Russian retirement in
th edirection of Warsaw became nec
essary.
The Associated Press correspondent
visited some of the battlefields in the
vicinity of Lodz and gained an idea

Study of Flock for
Winter Eggs
Winter egg production depends upon a
variety of things. It is not alone breeding,
housing and feeding. It results from the
proper handling of the fowls throughout their
eggs-producing period.
Sometimes it is an individual study of the
flock. Feeds, too, have to be changed accord
ing to seasons. The kinds of foods for differ
ent breeds are also to be considered. In other
words, no cut-and-dried method of raising and
caring for a flock designed for layers can be
given. But certain general rules will be out
lined in next week’s article.
Look for it appearing exclusively in The
Herald.

of the nature of the operations which
led to the city's capture.
Pitchfork Form.
According to the general alignment
of the Austro-German forces, they
might have been expected to advance
from the west. However the attack
was made largely from the north and
northwest. They drove their columns
Into the Russians in the form of a
huge pitchfork, with another large
force between the tines.
It looked for a time as if the Rus
sians would be forced to retreat —if
retrat were possible in the face of the
gigantic enveloping movement in the
direction of their Warsay base. The
Intention was to drive the Russians
into the arms of large Austro-German
forces, massed to cut off their retreat
but the timely arrival of Russian re
serves from Warsaw resulted in the
breaking of the eaternmost tine of the
fork, relieving the situation for the
Russians.
“Cutting Off.”
In one of the operations around
Lodz occurred the celebrated “cutting
off” of two German army corps, which
after being entirely surrounded, cut
their way out and brought with them
12,000 of their would-be captors. The
scene of tha f exploit, which a mem
ber of the general staff characterized
as one of the most brilliant of the war
was Strykow, ten miles northeast of
Lodz.
About the same distance west of
Lodz is the little church yard of Bes
chici, where the Russians, in one of
the final phases of the struggle for
Vodz. showed that in spite of their
defeats and discouragements they
knew how to fight and die. This
'church yard lies on a small eminence
which formed a salient in the German
lines. The Germans were able to at
tack from three sides with infantry
and artillery. All Russian trenches
were infiladed by shrapnel from one
direction or another but the Russians
< clung to their positions obstinately.
When the Germans finally captured
the trenches 878 Russian corpses were
found in a spaco about eighty yards
square. It was resistance of that na
ture which the Germans had to over
come to capture Lodz.
Resistance.
The Russians are again offering ob
stinate resistance as was learned to
! day from German staff officers along
' fbe Bzura and Rawaka Rivers on their
| positrons, running north and south
along a line 30 to 35 miles west of
j Warsaw.
A captured Russian officer who
speaks good German said that what
impressed his men most greatly was
the Prussian "anpraU”—the silent ad
vance of the German troops, the as
sault by line after line of dark "ig
ures moving toward the Russian posi
tion like wavelets of a rising tide,
their utter heedlessness of the Russian
fire, which appeared to be wasted on
them. They saw men fall, but the
gaps filled up instantly by others from
the rear line and the advance kept on
despite their efforts tried them terri
bly, causing nerves to snap.
Quick Work.
The evacuation of Lodz was ef
fected so quietly that the Germans did
not team of it until the next morn
ing. The usual German night patrols
had been sent out to keep in contact
with the enemy but the Russians
threw a thin but impenetrable screen
before their front.
Heavy fighting occurred at Kons
tantinow, ten miles southwest of Lodz.
It suffered mostly from artillery fire.
Other suburbs of Lodz suffered less
severely and the city itself as far as
could be ascertained has not been
damaged. An efficient municipal ad
ministration has been set up by
the military authorities who have in
augurated much needed sanitary
measures.

Japanese Warnings.
The Japanese early sought for the
truth, and their earliest knowledge
was the principle that their strength
depended on a healthy stomach. They
eat very little and practice “Jiu-Jitsu”
—muscular exercise from youth up.
The stomach is the center of the body
from which radiates our vitality,
strenuosity, our fighting strength. A
healthy stomach turns the food we
eat into nourishment for the blood
stream and the nerves. I)r. Pierce's
Golden Medical Discovery' refreshes
and tones up the stomach walls. Re
moves the poisonous gases from the
system.
The first day you start to take this
reliable medicine, Impure germs and
accumulations begin to separate in the
blood and are then expelled through
the Liver, Bowels and Kidneys.
In place of the impurities, the ar
teries and veins gradually get fresh vi
talized blood and the action of this
good blood on the skin means that
pimples, boils, carbuncles, eczema,
rash, acne and all skin blemishes will
disappear. Then you must remember
that when the blood is right, the liver,
stomach, bowels and kidneys become
healthy, active and vigorous and you
will have no more trouble with indi
gestion, backache, headache and con
stipation.
