TOMORROW IS THE LAST DAY OF
MY “UP-AGAINST IT SALE”
Last of Old Time
Booksellers, of
London, Now Dead
The death of Bertram I)o
--bel, a down-town bookseller, commands
more space in the Ixmdon newspapers
than the obituary of any man since
Lord Roberts. He was the last of the
old-time London hook.sellers, and oc
cupied a. unique place In literary life
for forty year a
Mr. Dobell not only sold hooks; he
loved them —some of (horn so well that
he practically refused to sell them. He
I read constantly and wrote occasional
i ly. Hls services as book-seller were
mainly performed for wealthy indl
j virtual buyers of old hooks. Of more
permanent Importance was his work
in encouraging budding genius, as he
occasionally earne upon It. His ad
miration for some of the early work
of James Thomson, author of "The City
of Dreadful Night" led to a friendship
thnt meant much to both men. Do
bell edited much of Thomson’s work
for publication, and after Thomson's
death collected and published nil his
writings.
Another service which Mr. Dobell
rendered to literature was the discov
ery and Identification of the works of
a forgotten seventeenth century writer,
Thomas Traherne. Mr. Dobell’s own
writings Included two volumes of
verse and one volume of prose, to
gether with numerous contributions to
the magazines and reviews.

STIRRING FIGHT
HI ‘FERRYMAN'S’
One of Most Thrilling Incidents
of Recent Fighting Around
Dixmude; House Turned Into
Fort.
London-- The fight for "Ferryman's
House” at Merckam, on the Yser Ca
nal, provided one of the most stirring
incidents of the recent fighting around
Dixmude.
"Merckam Is on the southern reach
of the Yser,” a correspondent writes,
"four miles or so east of the road to
Ypres. On the eastern side of the
water is a house which on a good
French road map may tie found tagged
‘Malaon du Passeur’—the Ferryman's
House. It is a relic no doubt of the
days before the building of the narrow
bridge that now spans the waters at
this point.
"This bridge for some time had been
a sort of no man’s land. It was com
manded by heavy artillery on the
French side, and also by a machine
gun battery on the German side. The
Germans occupied Ferryman's House,
which they had turned Into a small
fort, with their machine guns mounted
at windows both upstairs and down.
“Neither side cared to destroy the
bridge, because each had hopes to use
It in an advance. The French finally
decided that things would be easier if
the Germans were driven out of the
neighborhood and he made his plans
to surprise them. The venture was a
rather risky one because of the vigil
ance of the German sentries and be
cause the position was so thoroughly
dominated by the machine guns.
"The colonel In charge asked for vol
unteers and selected from those who
offered an even four hundred men.
One hundred of them were African
troops, who are always eager for any
work of exceptional daring
“Not long after midnight the de
tachment started out on their mis
sion. They were discovered when they
reached the bridge and the German
muchlne guns opened fire at the end
of the bridge. The French troops
sprinted through the hail of shot, de
spite heavy losses, and a fair propor
tion of them reached the house In two
or three minutes. Then it w’as a
hand-to-hand fight. The Germans
fought first from their covering walls
outside, hut were shot dow'n bayonet
ted or knifed. The garrison retreated
indoors and to the outbuildings all of
which had been loopholed for use In
case of attack. The door fell before
an African’s axe. The French troops
dashed in, using bayonets only. Across
the ground floor and up the stairs the
conflict continued, until the only
enemies remaining were a little group
In the attic, who surrendered when
they saw that resistance was useless
"The winning of Ferryman's House
removed the most advanced German
position In this region and gave the
Allies command of a most useful
bridge The lieutenant who carrlrd
out the raid has been recommended
for a decoration.”

BLUE CROSS TRYING TO
STOP HORSEFLESH WASTE
London.—The Blue Cross Fund is
not only trying to alleviate the suf
fering of wounded horses but also to
lessen the wastage of horseflesh in
war. In view of the fact that the four
months’ fighting has drained Europe of
Its supply of horses the allied army
looks to the Blue Cross to save ani
mals for further service.
There have been established in
France, largely through the co-opera
tion of the French government, veteri
nary hospitals which are now caring
for some 2.000 animals. Three of these
farm hospitals are In Normandy, and
others at Glsors, Fontainebleau, pro
venre and Troyes. Seven camp hos
pitals are also established at the front,
which look after animals suffering
fTom overwork, exposure and sicknesi
as well as from wounds. Prompt treat
ment has materially reduced the death
rate.
The Blue Cross Fund is an offshoot
of the Dumb Friends League, which
corresponds to the Society for the Pre
vention of Cruelty to Animals of the
American cities.

Vigilance for Good Service
17 VERY Bell Telephone exchange has its wire chief. He is
‘■-'unknown to the subscriber, but his important task is to see
that the talk tracks, both inside and outside the exchange, are
kept constantly in good working order. Day and night, the
work of testing the lines and apparatus goes on. Complaints
are promptly followed up and breaks are often repaired before
the subscriber knows of the trouble or is inconvenienced.
The constant vigilance of the wire chiefs keeps the 14,000,000
