WOULD REPEAL I
WAREHOUSE LI
I Hampton County Representa
tive in South Carolina Gen
eral Assembly Discusses the
Situation.
Hampton, S. C.—Hon. Oeo. Warren,
member of the house of representa
tives from Hampton County, while in
Hampton a few days ago discussed
his bill Introduced to repeal the state
j warehouse law which was enacted by
the general assembly In special ses
!.‘ion last fall. Mr. Warren gave out
| the following statement:
| “The State Warehouse System wax
established during the extra session
of the legislature when the people
throughout the state were panic
stricken. It was established because
of the Widespread demand of the leg
islators to do something that would
assist, the farmer. The warehouse
system was advocated very strongly
nt the regular session by former
I’nited States Senator John L. Mc-
Laurin. It has numerous defects.
Upon Its passage In the legislature
Senator McLaurln was elected as its
head, and since that time has leased
and rented warehouses with a capac
ity as lie states, of 45,000 bales of
cotton. Suppose that cotton was stor
ed to the full capacity of the system j
only about 3 per cent on three bales j
out of every hundred, in South Caro- j
Una could be accommodated in the
said warehouses. Since the intro
duction of the bill I have received let
ters from people throughout South
Carolina, joining me in advocating
the repeal of the warehouse law. Most
of these letters arc from farmers who !
have applied to state warehouses and
find that in order to store their cot
ton In state warehouses they will have
to pay a great advance over ordinary
storage and insurance as charged by
private corporations and Individuals.
There Is a considerable sentiment
among the members of the legislature
that the warehouse system is simply
n nucleus of a great political ma
chine to be built up in South Caro
lina, rivaling the old dispensary sys
tem, | have been Informed and
verily believe that if the system Is
allowed to expand, tho only result of
its expansion will he the perfection
of this political machine, reaching its
tentacles Into every town and com
munity wherein a warehouse is es
tablished Therefore, if for no
reason than to throttle the octopus
in its infancy, tho system should be
abolished. In order to perfect the
system as Is recommended by Senator
McLuurln, it will lie necessary to ap
propriate more money and give more
power to the commissioner."

Rehearsing Weekly. “The
Deacon” to be Given Soon.
The nodal committee of the Y. M.
G. A. announce the presentation of
“The Deacon," a farce comedy, at the
jY. M. C. A. Building the first week
in February. The positive date will
j lie announced shortly.
This entertainment, to which all
members of the association and their
friends and their friends, are cordially
invited, will, it is expected, prove one
of the most delightful of the season.
The social committee also makes
announcement of Its preparation for
the Y. M. C. A.'s annual circus. It is
very pleasing to know that the fa
mous iilndpaw & Jingling Brothers’
Circus, menagerie and side shows are
to return this spring. They are com
ing the first part of March, the exact
date to be announced later. It Is
probable, so It Is learned, that the
circus will give two performances
this year, remaining over two nights.
The performers—and every one of
them are members of the Augusta Y.
M. C. A. —are rehearsing regularly
every week. Last year 165 men and
hoys took part In the circus and side
shows and it will require at least this
many. If not more, to put on this gi
gantic spectable this year. It Is one
social event of the year that eclipses
all others, and very likely is a greater
social affair than any Y. M. C. A. In
this part of the country has ever un
dertaken. Tho attendance for the one
night's performance last year was
fifteen hundred.

MacFerrin, pastor of the Greene Street
Presbyterian churrh, and was a very
able effort He held the closest at
tention of his audience the entire time
he spoke.
The committee that got up the mu
sical program are deserving of a word
of praise. The music, as usual, 1 was
h very attractive part of the service.
Especially good was the violin solo by
Professor Klein, of the Bon Air Hotel
orchestra.
In consideration of the had weather,
the attendance was unusually good.
With a fair day Sunday after next,
when the next meeting will he held, It
Is hoped the theater will he filled to
Its utmost capacity.

The Chicago packing houses have
