IN REPLY TO LETTER OF DR
WHITNEY, PUBLISHED MAY 18TH.
\UBlista, <!tt . May 18, 1916.
My War I>r Whitney:
In your letter appearing In the Au
gusta Uhronlele of this date, addressed
to the editor of that paper, the follow
ing statement Is made:
"But the Terminal Company has op
tions on a lot of this property and
wants to make It an attractive selling
proposition by means of a track run
ning through lt.“
May I ask the source of this erro
neous Information? The Terminal
Company has not, as you se'em to be
lieve. entered Into a real estate specu
lation. It sought in the first instance
only to obtain access to the tracks of
the C. & W. C. at the end of Mcln
tosh street, but were compelled to buy
all the property through which they
had only desired a right of way. If
ell her you or your Informant are of
the opinion that having run a track
through this property there is any op
portunity for a profitable real estate
speculation, we will be glad to dispose
of It to you for exactly what It cost
us.
The facts are those Interested In the
new Terminal Company have purchas
ed and hold options only on such prop
erty as It is necessary lo acquire In
order to pfovlde the right of way for
tracks.
The so-called Augusta A Summer
ville contract referred to by you ex
pires in about ten years. The pro
posed ordinance bearing on the new
Terminal Company stipulates that It
(halt become a party to said contract
and any renewal thereof
I during the day to send you
a copy of this ordinance as will he In
troduced at the next meeting of coun
cil, and Invite your very careful con
sideration of same.
We have had every encouragement
from our best and foremost dttsens
and the commercial bodies and also
the city officials,.and I sincerely trust
that after a study of the question you
will appreciate the great advantages
tc the southeast, and to Augusta In
Particular, that would result from the
building of the proposed new Terminal
road, and Join us in our efforts to pro
vide this very neci scary facility in
order lo secure the fullest and greatest
development.
While this letter Is not. like your
own. addressed to the editor of the
Chronicle, I feel that. Inasmuch as the
imputations contained In your letter
were given lo the public, nty reply
thereto should have a similar public! •
tty, and am. therefore, sending a copy
of this letter to both the editors of the
Augusta Chronicle and the Augusta
Herald for publication.

be kept free from flies.
See that the propriwror of your neigh
borhood store sets traps in the back
yard of the store so as to catch the fly
on it* way from its breeding place.
The proprietor can also see that his
store is made "flyless”’ before the day’s
business begins, by providing rlerkr
with swatters and having them bet busy.
He can also see that breeding place*
are cleaned at least once a week within
a radius of 500 yards about his place of
business.
If for any reason, the presence of ma
nure or other filth must be tolerated in
a neighborhood fo,r more than a week it
should be sprinkled with a solution of
copperas to kill fly magots.
Point out to the proprietor that you
arid your neighbors are keenly alive to
the fact that flies are irangerous when
they are allowed to crawl on food and
that you will not trade with markets,
bake shops, restaurants, grocery and
milk depots that are not flyless or where,
at least, considerable effort i» made to
make them “flyless.“

Passaic, N. J., has the unenviable dis
tinction of being first on the list with a
death rate of 42.6 per cent., more than
four times the death rate at Augusta. It
Is a matter of Interest to further note
the fact that the Southern cities, in gen
eral, have a lower death rate than the
Northern ones. Augusta, Jacksonville
and Atlanta, in order, have the lowest
death rates. A glance at the figures
given is both Interesting and instructive.
