MEW YORK STOCK MARKET
New York.—Reading was again the
center of interest at the opening of to
day’s market, its seven-point advance of
the previous day to 100 or double par on
an enormous overturn furnishing one of
the most sensational feature-* of recent
years. The stock opened with an offer
ing of 12,000 shares at yesterday’s record
price, followed by blocks of 1,000 to 3,-
000 shares at steady gains up to 101%.
Reading second preferred also made a
new high record at 52 and other leading
rails responded with one to two-point
gains. Specialties were almost neglect
ed in the demand for standard stocks
but material advances were registered in
that quarter of the market.
NEW ORLEANS COTTON
New Orleans.—Poor cables resulted in
a loss of five to seven points in cotton
prices around the opening of the market
today but low temperatures over a large
portion of the belt brought in buying or
ders on which the market steadied. At
the end of the first half hour of busi
ness trading months were unchanged to
two points down compared to yesterday’s
close.
Week-end liquidation of long cotton
worked against values and toward noon
the market showed a. net loss of 9 to 10
points.
Cotton opened steady. Opening bid:

NEW YORK COTTON
New York.—The cotton market was
somewhat irregular and unsettled early
today with realizing more or less in evi
dence. Liverpool was hardly up to ex
pectations and the market here opened
at a decline of one to five points. There
was good buying around the initial fig
ure. with commission houses active, and
prices rallied right after the call with
Julv selling at 13.27 and October at 13.32
or about three to four points net higher.
The further rains reported In the south
west may have contributed to this ad
vance which established a new high level
in the case of July contracts, but there
was active realizing which became more
general after the publication of the west
ern belt forecast for fair and warmer
weather. Prices eased off in conse
quence with July selling down to 13.19
and October to 13.25, or about four points
net lower.
Realizing continued later in the morn
ing and prices gradually wodked off to
13.15 for July and 13.29 for October or
some eight to nine points lower. Local
cotton men seemed to thtnk that the crop
would make a rapid Improvement wi*h
fair warm weather and the better weath
er map was probably a factor on the de-

CHICAGO GRAIN MARKET
Chicago, I ll.—Wheat shewed fresh
weakness today as the result of peace
talk, but the new declines failed to last.
Lack of rain in southern Kansas tended
to overcome bearisli sentiment. Opening
prices which ranged from % to 1% lower
with July at 1.12 to 1.12% and September
at 1.12% to 1.12% were followed by a
virtually complete recovery.
Rapid progress of planting put the
bulls at a disadvantage in the corn mar
ket. After opening unchanged tc % low
er prices underwent a material sag all
around.
Oats suffered a downturn with corn.
Commission houses led the selling.
Higher quotations on hogs made pro
visions advance.
