Which is More Valuable-Teacher or Policeman?
In many of the larger eastern cities,
definite steps will be taken this sum
mer to remedy these defects In our
American public school system:
The discrimination against married
women teachers (almost universal).
The employment of women teachers
In grammar and high schools to a
greater extent than men.
The low wages paid to teachers, es
pecially those in the promary depart
ments.
• • •
We have long beep proud of our pub
lic school system In this country. The
highest virtue of this system Is that
It provides free education for all the
classes, and that education is compul
sory.
Hut after this has been duly consid
ered. there are many high spots In our
schools that fairly glitter with defects.
The charge, frequently made, that
our boys are Influenced by effleminacy
Is true, but we cannot employ men
teachers at the wage now paid to wo
men.
Why, for Instance, do more school
trustees and directors bar married wo
men teachers?
They say because unmarried women
must support themselves and should
be given the chance. This reasoning
Is that the Job of teaching Ib a mat
ter of employment for single women;
the needs of the youngsters Is not con
sidered.

Do you not believe that a married

In most cities a policeman receives
nearly twice as much salary as a wo
man school teacher.
Ho while we boast of our American
school system we admit, by this de
termination of wages, that we pay only
half as much to the Individual who
trains our coming citizens as we do
to the man who arrests those who
transgress laws.
A school teacher must possess train

CONFESSIONS
OF A WIFE
ALICE’S SPEAKING FACE CALLS
UP STRANGE THOUGHTS.
Alice, my little nurse, came to me this
morning with the strongest expression
on her face. It wus a mixture of as
tonishment. relief and a. little shame.
1 did riot say anything to her for,
little book, one thing 1 have learned
and learned thoroughly is that no one
has any business encroaching on the
private thoughts of others.
There may be times, possibly, when
w’e may take a hand In other people’s
affairs for it Is always impossible to
act without some one knowing some
thing about it.
Hut one’s thoughts! They may be
entirely private property.
I'll tell you, little bosk, sometimes
my thoughts are so private that I hate
to repeat them to myself. Kven to
you, I have not voiced, or rather writ
ten, some of the very vital things that
have been born in my brain and are
now living In my heart. .Sometime I
may tell them to you. but not now.
However, my long illness and the
knowledge that to me come these un
bidden thoughts make me think that
others have them 100, (I have long dis
missed the Idea, little book, that 1 am
any different from the average wo
man, and almost unconsciously f have
come to see them print themselves on
the faces of my friends and loved
ones.
It was with a very feminine feeling
of triumph that I found, log that I am,'
I hail tho power to lure Dick to me
the other night and yet I know that If
I remain as I am I must comply with
his request I must not ask him to dine
with rne and make myself as pretty as
I can to receive him.
The tempter at my car tells me to do
this—-every woman In this world likes
to feel that she is resistless under some
circumstances. Even the worst or best
feminist of them all—the one that de
clares she hates men-, likes to feel she
can mould them to he? will by the force
of her brain If not by reason of her
feminine magnetism.
Let me whisper a great and very
secret confession to you, little book.
I have seen many women and know
many of them intimately, and I have
never known one so young or so old
that she did not like to influence a man
by her feminine wiles.
It Is nature. You see It In the tiny
little girl of four when she unconscious
ly flirts with grandpa by putting her
soft, cheek against his and curves her
rouglsh lips In the most endearing, and
Innocent of smiles. You see it in the
faint tint that comes to grandma’s face
when her fuvorlte grandson gathers her
up In his athletic arrriH and proclaims
loudly that she Is prettier than any girl
he has met at college.
However, 1 am going to try and he
big enough to let Dick forget me. I
know he has had a great recrudescence
of love for me lately. You see, little
book, he must have felt two kinds of

Western Lecturer,
Former Mayor, To
Talk for Suffrage
J. Stitt Wilson, former socialist
mayor of Berkeley, Cal., who has be
gun a campaign in lowa in favor of
women’s suffrage, which will be voted
on there June 6. Wilson hus been en
gaged for this whirlwind tour by Mrs.
Carrie Chapman Catt, national presi
dent of the Women’s Suffrage Associ
ation.
The former mayor is one of the
country's foremost writers and lec
turers, and is an ardent supporter of
the women's cause. He did more than
any other speaker for equal suffrage
in California and his stirring talks
were largely responsible for the wom
en’s victory.
Wilson will follow John P. Irish, of
Oakland, Cal., who has already toured
lowa, declaring women's suffrage a
failure in the Golden Stale. The fa
mous socialist left California armed
with resolutions from women’s eluhs
and other state organisations show
ing up the fallacy of Irish's argument.
Last fall Wilson spent two months
campaigning for the women’s causa
through the state of New York. There
he followed Irish and answered him in
New York City.
