NEW YORK COTTON
New York. —The cotton market opened
barely steady at a decline of two to 14
points today in response to lower ca
bles, with December selling at 16.00 and
January at 16.08. Humors that a South
ern statistical bureau estimated the
condition of the crop at 59.8 against
62.7 last month, and the ginning up to
September 2bth at 4,290,000 to 4,390,000
bales may have inspired some of the
early selling, blit offerings were check
ed by apprehensions of lower tempera
tures in the bolt and the market soon
turned steadier. December rallied to 16.07
and January tc 16.15 before the end of
the first hour on covering.
The early rally carried December up
to 16.09 and January to 16.18, or three
to four points net higher and it was esti
mated around the ring that the buying
by Wall street. Liverpool and trade in
terests during the first hour represented
at least 60,000 bales. Later demand
tapered off however and the market was
comparatively quiet around midday al
though prices held steady within a point
or two of the best.
Cotton continued quiet during the mid
dle of the afternoon hut prices narrow
ed around 16.16 or about 26 points net
higher.
Cotton closed steady.

Characterized the opening of today’s
broad and active market in wnien the
familiar performance of new records was
repeated, Insipartion Copper and Re
public Steel selling higher than before.
Other industrials and coppers moved in
keeping while rails lost none of their re
cent buoyancy. Marines and other ship
ping issues materially extended gains of
the preceding session and a substantial
recovery in Stutz featured the motors.
United States Steel gave promise, re
gaining much of its recent prominence
and various specialties were at higher
levels.
Steel was rushed up to 11% and back
to 116% in the last hour, other Indus
trials showing strength while rails und
Marines were lower. The closing was
irregular.

WITH THE RECORDER
When it comes to stretching the truth
till it resembles nothing so much as vivid
prevarication, a certain Augusta negro
should receive a gilt-edged certificate of
hM "lie-ability.”
There came before the recorder Thurs
day morning two negroes charged with a
misdemeanor. It appears that they en
gaged in a fracas and that one inflicted
a slight knife wound on the head of the
other. However, the wounded negro
Btrengously endeavored to defend his as
sailant, which goes on to show that
"birds of a feather flock together"—es
pecially blackbirds. This colored citi
zen solemnly swore—with hand uplifted
—that he couldn't say who cut him; that
the wound might have been inflicted by
another party at another time; and that
the wound might have been caused by
him falling to the ground, though he
wasn’t sure whether he fell or not, etc.
After hearing all his testimony the re
corder told the negro that In his career
as recorder he had never met with a ne
gro with such an aptitude for inventing
explanatory prevarications. The negro
seemed to take it as a well deserved
compliment and walked off smilingly.
The negro alleged to have done the
Plashing was bound over to the city
court.
NEW ORLEANS COTTON
New Orleanz.—Cotton lost four to five
polntß In the first half hour of business
on this market today on selling stimu
lated by poor cables. The market was
held steady by the rains In the central
belt and fear of colder weather In the
West, but developed no buying power In
the early trading.
Although much comment was aroused
by a forecast of record-breaking ginning
to Septejnber 25th, the market held
steady and Improved moderately. In the
trading up tc noon prices were put four
to five points over yesterday’s close.
The steadiness waz chiefly due to favor
able mill accounts.
The market was stagnant In the aft
ernoon. At 1:30 the trading months
were at a net advance of one to three
points.
Cotton closed steady three points u»
to one point down, net.

CHICAGO MARKETS
Chicago, 111. —Notwithstanding that
wheat showed weakness at the outset
today, the market later developed
strength. Initial declines were due to re
ports that Greece had finally decided to
enter the war. The bearish influence
of this news, however, was soon more
than offset by reports that predicted
rains in Argentina had failed to appear,
and that drought damage was growing
worse. Opening prices which ranged
from % to lc lower, with December at
$1.51 % to $1.52% and May at $1.52 to
$1.52%, were followed by an upturn tp
well above yesterday’s finish.
Continued wet weather had a fullish
effect on corn. After opening % off to
% up, the market scored gains all
around, especially in the September de
livery.
Oats hardened with other cereals.
Changes in the value of provisions
were erratic. September pork was want
ed by shorts, who were forced to bid up
the option to a new high record for this
season.
Rears in wheat were handicapped by
gossip that although threshing in the
northwest virtually had been completed
the movement from the interior was
extremely light and that farmers seem
ed to have adopted a holding policy
despite urgent demand for flour. The
close was unsettled, 2; to 2% net high
er, with December and May both at
$1.54%.
Large Lake charters counted In favor
of the bulls In corn and so did Argen
tine demand reports. The close was
nervous at % to 1% net advance.

PICKING. GINNING
GOES ON RAPIDLY
Washington, D. C. —Picking and gin
ning of cotton have been punned in
practically all portions of the belt, with
very favorable weather, during the week
just ended. Reviewing conditions for
that week the national weather and crop
bulletin in its last weekly issue for the
season says:
"Over the greater portion of the cot
ton belt the week was rainless, afford
ing Ideal weather for gathering the crop,
and picking and ginning maae rapid
progress. In North Carolina the crop
is nearly two weeks late, generally
short, and is deteriorating in some sec
tions, but picking is becoming general
In that state. In South Carolina and
Georgia cool nights delayed the open
ing of the late bolls, but picking is well
advanced in both these states.
"Picking progressed rapidly in Texas
and Oklahoma and about half the crop
has been gathered in those states. Wee
vil continue active in destroying the top
crop in Texas, but in Oklahoma this
crop made fair growth, although only a
light crop is indicated. The top crop
is poor in Georgia, but is improving in
South Carolina. The gathering of the
crop continued uninterruptedly In the
central portion of the belt, where this
work is well advanced but weevil con
tinue active in central Alabama. The
crop is decidedly short in Florida and
much is being sold in seed in that state."
