New York.—Private reports of frost at
points in Oklahoma, Texas and Tennes
see seemed to promote no general de
mand In the cotton mas-set today, either
in Liverpool or New York. Relatively
easy cables were attributed to hedge sell
ing, and the market here opened irregu
lar at a decline of four points to an ad
vance of two points. Prices worked
about three to four points net higher
right after the call on Wall street and
trade buying with December selling at
16.13 and January at 16.18 but there was
further scattered realizing for over the
week-end and prices sagged off again
after the first few minutes.
Cotton closed barely steady.
Trading was quiet later with fluctua
tions narrow but prices showed a ten
dency to sag off under continued liquida
tion and the close was barely steady net
one point higher to five points lower.

NEW ORLEANS COTTON
New Orleans.—Poor cables put cotton
four to six points lower on the opening
call on this market today but there wat
a quick advance after the call on th#
cold wave over the belt. At the end of
the first half hour of business prices of
the most active months were a point
over yesterday's close.
Cotton closed steady at a decline of
four to nine points.
Liquidation of long contracts increased
as the session grew older and toward the
close the training months were seven
to nine points under the last prices of
yesterday.

CHICAGO GRAIN MARKET
Chicago, lll.—Worse crop prospects re
ported today from Argentina resulted in
a new upward swing of wheat prices.
The fact that the Liverpool market fail
ed to follow yesterday's late decline here
tended to further handicap the bears,
and so too did word that European
stocks wore light for this time of the
year. Opening prices, which ranged
from half to 1% higher, with December
at $1.54t0 $1.55 and May at $1.54% to
$1.54% were followed by additional gains
and then something of a reaction.
Corn hardened slightly with wheat.
After opening %(§'% off to % up. the
market rose all around to a little above
yesterday’s finish.
Only a scattered trade developed in
oats. Prices showed noimportant change.
Provisions were irregular. January op
tions were under considerable selling
pressure but shorts were bidding for
nearby deliveries.
Realizing sales by belated longs in
September led afterward to decided set
backs in wheat. The close was wea-k
at $1.54 for December and $1.53% for
May with the market as a whole 2% off
to % up compared with yesterday’s
finish.
Later the corn market eased off when
wheat turned weak. The close was
steady at the same as yesterday's finish
to %@ % lower.

NEW YORITsTOCiTiyiARKET
New York.—Concerted efforts, evident
ly of professional origin, were made to
depress prices soon after today’s open
ing. leading industrials, coppers and
rails abruptly declining two to almost
five points. Selling of United States Steel
and Republic an*l Crucible Steels was
especially extensive, together with Union
Pacific and American Smeting.
Recessions of two to three points oc
curred in other prominent issues, with
the first hour’s sales again on the basis
of 2,000,000 shares for a full day. Tho
market rallied later on a demand for
coalers, Norfolk and Western taking a
new high record. Lehigh Valley ad
vanced to its best quotation in years, and
Illinois Central was active and strong.
The closing was irregular.
Bonds were firm.
