TUESDAY, MAY L
RICHMOND COUNTY TO
FURNISH 350 MEN OF
500,000 BY DRAFT
Georgia is expected to furnish about
14,000 of the first 600,000 men to be se
cured by draft, according to figures an
nounced Monday. The population of
Georgia is about 2,500,000 and if the pop
ulation of Richmond county is 60,000 the
quota from this county will be about one
fortieth of 14,000, which is 350, amounting
to three full infantry companies and a
half, or perhaps a battalion may be se
cured, which is four full infantry com
panies. It is possible that some infantry,
cavalry and artillery companies will be
organised here, but the probability is
that infantry will predominate.
Wth 350 men sent from Augusta and
Richmond county under conscription
there will be a total of about 750 enlisted
in the National Guard and in the new
600,000 army from this city, to say noth
ing of the number of men furnished the
regular army and marine corps. How
ever, a considerable percentage of those
enlisted in the National Guard from Au
fusta are from joining Georgia and
outh Carolina counties.

and will be for the business men. The
second, for the women of Augusta will
take place at 5 p. m. and the third will

to the front in this city.
The Red Cross organization promises
to grow with leaps and bounds in Au
gusta. The people have become greatly
interested in this work since ex-Presi
den.t Taft made his great Red Cross

HOOVER’S ADVICE TO THE
AMERICAN HOUSEWIFE
IS—ELIMINATE WASTE
(BY THE UNITEO PRESS.)
New York.—American women can
maintain the allied armies on the firing
line by eliminating waste In the home,
la the opinion of Hertxirt Hoover, who
la to be American food controller. In a
copyrighted article In today’s House
wife.
"If we are to pull our allies through
with sufficient foodstuffs to maintain
their men at ths front and their wo
men and children at home, we have elm
ply got to reduce waste and consump
tion of foodstuffs to the minimum upon
which we can maintain good health,"
Hoover warns,
“This can be done If we have the
united good will and devotion of ths
American woman. They control directly
8* per cent of the total food, being that
part consumed In the home, and they In
directly control a large part of the food
consumed In public places."
Hoover advises the wealthy to eat lux
uries exclusively and thus conserve the
staples for exportation.
"From the poln! of view of our allies
and our own poor In these times of high
prices," he sgld, "the Ideal meat of tha
well to do would he terrapin, turkey
and tenderloin.”
I’rglng every housewife to study scien
tific food value. Hoover suggested that
Americans so far as possible eat fish,
fruit, potatoes, vegetables, poultry and
dairy products, which cannot be export
