GERMANS TALK PLAIN
ON PRESENT WAR AIMS
Free Discuasiona by Various
Factions as to Future Plans.
Amsterdam —At the rerent sitting of
the German reichstag Herr IloMlckr
(conservative), in putting an inter
pellation about Herman war alma
urged that peaee should not he con
cluded without annexations and In
demnities Herr Scheldeman (soclal
lat). aald:
If jrrance and Great Britain re
nounced annexation and Germany In
sisted on It, they would have a revo
lution In the country. Hut the enemy
did not renounce annexation. He was
firmly convinced that no peaee could
be concluded without an alteration of
frontiers, but that must be arranged
by mutual understanding.
‘Herr von Bethmann Hollweg said:
The Interpellations which have Just
now been brought forward demand
from me a definite, detailed statement
regarding the question of our war
alms. To make such a statement at
the present moment would not serve
tha intercuts of tha country. ("Very
true") I must therefore decline to
make one, (Cheers In the renter).
Klnoe the winter of 1814-15 I have
Iteen pressed first on one side and then
on another to make a public statement
of our war aims, If possible with de
tails. (loud shouts from the right of
"No, no. - ’) They were demanded of
me every dav. (Shouts from the right
of "But not detnlls ") To force me to
speak an attempt was made to con
strue my silence regarding the pro
gram of war alms of different parties
as my assent thereto. Against that I
must again resolutely protea. When
giving permission for a free dearie*
slon concerning our w#r aims 1 ex
pressly declared that the government
could not and would nAJ take part In
any controversy I also protested
against any positive conclusion what
ever as to the government's attitude
being drawn from the government's
alienee. I now repeat this protesl In
the most emphatic manner. (Cheers).
What I was able to Hay at any time
about our war alms 1 have said here
publicly In the relchstag They were
fundnmental principles they could
not bt mono than that (choem) hut
they were sufficiently clear to exclude
identification such as has been it
tempted with other programs. I have
adhered to these fundamental expres
sions In the peace offer made co
lolntly with our allies on December
12. 1818 (Cheers). The supposition
Which has recently arisen that earn'
differences of opinion existed between
up and our allies regarding the ques
tion of peace belongs to the realm of
fable. (l/(>ud cheers.) I expi-rasl;
states this now wdth the conviction

clusion of the war. (Loud cheers).
Beyond that I cannot do arytnlni and
I cannot say anything. If the general
situation obliges me to maintain an il

present, 1 will maintain tills reserve,
and no pressure either from Herr

for every American home today to

This is a little thing to do. Tt

At this time of the year every
