URGES SUSPENSION OF
MINORS BELOW CLASS A
AFTER FOURTH OF JULY
Chicago.—Suspension of thirteen minor
leagues operating below Class A classi
fication alter the Fourth of July games
was urged by President A. R. Tearny of
the Three I League last night, in an ap
peal to the leagues’ executives asking
them to act concertedly.
The war and the unfavorable weather
conditions will make this action neces
sary. President Tearney believes.
The Three T League, one of the oldest
and best known of the minors, will meet
in special session here today formally to
consider suspending after the fourth of
July. All of the clubs have lost heavily
because of inclement weather. The finan
cial situation of the Three I League re
flects the condition of all the minor or
ganisations. according to President Tear
ney. who made a personal canvass of the
situation.
“From the canvass I made I do noj
think there is a small minor league in
the country with the possible exception
of one or two, that will be able to survive
the season,” Tearney said. “The weather
this season has been the worst in years.
The clubs must consider the war tax that
undoubtedly will be placed on baseball
and the effect of the draft for military
service. All of these will come in addi
tion to the present trouble.”

NEW ORLEANS COTTON
New Orleans.—Th« opening of the cot
ton market here today was irregular,
with the strongest months showing an
advance of two to three points, but other
months at the decline under the influ
ence of a poor Liverpool and a trade cir
cular claiming an Increase in acreage
of less than one-half of one per cent.
After the call there was a sharp break
which amounted to 28 to 39 points on the
most active months.
Cotton closed steady at an advance of

NEW YORK COTTON
New York.—There was renewed realis
ing or liquidation in the cotton market at
the opening today, first prices being
steady at a decline of 16 to 40 points.
Near months were relatively firm at the
start in sympathy with Liverpool, but
soon eased off with October selling down
to 24.00 or 36 points net lower right after
the call and fully a cent under the high
level of last Wednesday. Trading was
active with.the tone nervous and unset
tled under reports of a diminishing deji
mand from spinners and of increased
spot offerings in the South. Private ca
bles reported that a prominent English
authority estimated the reduction in
acreage at less than half of one per cent
and said that the crop had made a poor
start but that an average yield was not
yet impossible.
Cotton closed barely steady.

CHICAGO GRAIN MARKET
Chicago.—Wheat prices today con
tinued to show a general downward
trend. Bearish crop reports w’ere influ
ential. Opening prices, which ranged
from the same as yesterday’s finish to
two cents low’er. with July at $2.25 and
September at $1.98, were followed by
something of a rally, but then by a
fresh setback.
Cold rainy weather had a bullish ef
fect on corn. Trade was active and sen
timent decidedly mixed. After opening
%c off to l%c up prlcwu scored a mod
erate general advance.
Oats developed firmness in sympathy
with corn. Advances however. were
checked by favorable crop advices.
Provisions were upheld by strength of
hogs and corn.
Predictions current that the domestic
w’heat production would be 30.000.000
bushels in excess of the government June
estimate tended to keep the market de
pressed. The close was steady two to
four cents net olwer, with July at $2.23
and September at $1.96.
Later the corn market reacted tempo
rarily as a result of a rise in tempera
tures and because of estimates that the
condition of the crop was equal to a ten
year average. The close was neverthe
less strong at % to l%c net advance.
