Opposition Now Develops
Among Members on One Sate
for Real Estate and Another
for Merchandise.
Atlanta. Ga.—Lack of public interest in
the new tax system pr pared by the tax
commission for submission to the legisla
ture is shown by the fact that the com
inic«ion cut in half its schedule of pub
lic hearings. '
When it started on Us tour,of the state
the commission figured on playing two
day stands at several places, including
Rome and Savannah and Waycross, but
the very small attendance at the other
hearings demonstrated conclusively that
there was no necessity for two-day ses
sions in any city, and accordingly the
program was cut half in two. and th*‘
committee spent only one day in the
cities named.
The plan proposed by the tax commis
sion is largely the work of Senator T>e-
Jarnette, who spent more time on it than
all the other members put together, and
talked them into a quasi acceptance of
Ms theories of tax revision. At least
two of the members have subsequently
got cold feet on the scheme and have
gone so far as to proclaim their opposi
tion in hearings heid by the commission.
These two “recalcitrants” are Repre
sentative Seaborn Wright of Floyd coun
ty and Senator L. R. Akin of Brunswick.
Their objection, and objection rais
ed in other quarters, is that the De-
Jarnette plan would levy one rate of tax
ation on real estate and another (and
lower) rate on stocks of merchandise,
stocks and bonds, money in bank, loans,
etc. It is claimed* that the natural re
sult of such a system would be to dis
courage investments in real estate, such
as farms, the state’s • main dependence
for revenue, and thereby cause a much
| higher rate of taxation to be levied on
this class of property.
HEROES oFll WARS
HONORED WITH VETS
Gigantic Monument on Stone
Mountain, Started foi; Confed
erates Will Be Memorial to
World War Heroes.
Atlanta. —The great monument to the
Confederate dead, planned for years by
the United Daughters of the Confederacy
as the most fitting memorial to the mem
ory of the heroic men who fought under
the Stars and Bars, is to be made a mon
ument to all southern heroes who fought
i?i the American wars from the revolu
tion to the great world war. The decision
was reached yesterday at a meeting of
the Stone Memorial
Association in Atlanta. The action whs
regarded as a manifestation of the wave
6f nationalism that f<w£pt the country at
the outbreak of the world war and wiped
out all sectionalism within the United
States.
The entire mountain is to be built into
one grand manument under the direction
of Gutzon Borglum. th** famous sculptor,
who originated the idea. While the mon
ument. as a whole 5 s to be in honor of
the southern men who died in all wars,
the great central figure of the creation
will be the monument to the Confederate
dead. # The state legislature passed a res
olution two years ago making May 20
Storm Mountain Memorial Pay, when* col
lections will be taken throughout the
south for the monument.

Every gardener jwill agree with me
that no garden is a garden without its
root crops. As much food, and more
can be grown, and tuber crops roots
make up the underground supply of
winter and summer food.
Root crops are radishes, beets, car
rots, parsnips, turnip and rutabaga.
Radishes may,be sown in rows which
later are given to other vegetables,
and turnips may be planted between
early maturing crops and allowed the
whole space as these are harvested.
But never plant two root crops in
the same spot in succession. To do
this would be to encourage insect and
worm pests peculiar to root crops
Fool the bugs by changing the rows
from a root to a foliage crop. For in
stance: Radishes, and then beans, or
cabbage; beets and then tomatoes or
late spinach.
For root crops you must spade deep
ly, especially if your soil is heavy,
otherwise the roots will be reformed.
They grow’ best in loose sandy soil,
free of sticks and stones. The require
a cool season for best grow’th, except
ing some varieties of the so-called
summer types. Therefore put rad
dishes, carrots, beets, parsnips in early
as soon as the ground can be worked.
WANTS 50 CARLOADS
OF GEORGIA PEANUTS
Atlanta, Ga.—As a result of efforts put
forth by L. B. Jackson, director of the
Georgia Bureau of Markets, to secure a
better price for p'-anuts produced by Geor
gia farmers, a St. bonis concern which
shells peanuts on a large scale, is in the
market for an offer to buy fifty carloads
at six cents a pound in bulk, or six and
a quarter cents a pound in sacks, f.o.b.
Georgia shipping points.
Director Jackson recently went to St.
Bonis, after attending the cotton confer
ence in Memphis, for the purpose of get
ting in touch with new markets for pea
nuts, watermelons, sweet potatoes, hogs
nnd other Georgia products. During the
coming season the bureau will place
Georgia growers of watermelons in touch
with markets where they can secure a
better price than ever before. Hence
•he bureau requests th names of grow
ers of watermelons and cantaloupes; the
acreage planted; the probable yield In car
loads; the probable dates w’hen the crop
will be ready for market, etc. This In
formation will enable the bureau to keep
In touch with the markets on the one
hand the growers on the other hand.
CHURCHWOMEN PLAN MEET
TO RiVAL THEIR MEN FOLKS
Atlanta, Ga.—Having been denied all
these years the privileges of the bay

* NEW USE FOR SEAWEED
London. —A novel use has been found
here' for seaweed. Con bind with crush
ed, slag and other heretofore neglected
waste mineral products, it is used to
make a kind of concrete out of which are
being fashioned building bricks and
blocks. The seaweed acts as a binding
[ and strengthening element.
I Arrangements are being made to put
| up a large number of houses composed
entirely of these blocks, and it is pre
dicted that the material, owing to its
cheapness, will aid in solving the hous
ing problem.
Not only the foundations and walls,
but the doors, window frames and man
telpieces are to be constructed of the
new concrete. The houses are to be
made in sections apd belted together.

CAN YOU SURVIVE
NOT ADVERTISING?
“My business is different—l can’t advertise.”
Stop right here, please. The fact that your business IS dif
ferent is the reason you can advertise.
If all stores were alike, advertising would be a difficult
problem.
The question is not, Can I use advertising? It is CAN I
SURVIVE WITHOUT ADVERTISING.
COMPETITION is growing keener and liercer.
Business men are feeling today more than ever the tremend
ous business-building power of publicity.
They are talking about their merchandise and their service
to thousands of people daily through their newspaper
advertisements.
According to Bradstreet and Dun 84% of business failures
are among firms WHO DO NOT ADVERTISE.
You may or may not survive without advertising.
But WITH advertising—wisely done—you can multiply your
profits and send your sales forging ahead.
