NEW YORK COTTON
New York —There was an active and
excited advance in the cotton market
during today’s early trading with nearly
all the new style months making new
high records. Mas- contracts sold at
28.65 and October at 25.30 or 85 to 95
points above the low level of Thursday
morning. Reactions followed with May
closing at 28.45 and October at 25.13 but
the final tone of the market was steady
with last nrices showing net gains of
20 to 32 points on the new and of 15 to
70 points on old style contracts.
The market was active and firm at
the opening which was 24 to 38 points
higher on new ttyle months, owing to:
the unfavorable w eather map. bullish j
reports from the goods trade and a more <
cheerful feeling over the Italian situs- i
tion. It looked as though a considerable 1
short interest had accumulated on recent
reactions and the prospects for continu
ed low temperatures in the South over
the week end served to stimulate cov
ering. There was also a good demand
from trade interests and commission
houses on the advance which carried
the new' style positions 40 to 50 points
above last night's closing figures. The
advance was then checked by realizing
and later fluctuation A were very irregu
lar with last prices showing reactions
of some 18 to 20 points from the best.
Temperatures were considered unsea
sonably low in practically all sections,
padrticularly in the eastern and central
belts, and the eastern belt forecast was
for frost in the Carolinas and possibly
light frosts in Georgia. Both the Amer
ican futures markets will be closed Mon- i
day while Liverpool will remain open and
free to trade on any unfavorable weather
development over Sunday. A local ex
porter reports difficulty in finding
freight room for May and early July
shipment.

NEW ORLEANS COTTON
New Orleans. La.—Low temperature
in the belt and the fear of their effect
on the germination of seed and the!
growth of young plants put the price of
cotton to higher levels today. The tone
was steady from the opening to tue :
close, but after the first upward rush in !
the early trading the tendency was to
react moderately under liquidation from I
the long side. This selling out was in- \
creased by the double holidays following I
the close, Monday being a holiday owing I
to the celebration over the homecoming!
of troops. At the highest levels prices
were 46 to 50 points up, the close was j
28 to 33 up.
May, the spot month, shared fully in)
the advance and rose to 27.60, a new t
high level for the new contract and the |
best quotation on futures as compared |
with spots in over two years. Middling I
spots were quoted at 27.63 and the rise I
in contracts therefore almost wiped out [
their discount.
Political news of overnight was re
garded as very unfavorable but the
! trade to be working on the. theory that
the situation would right itself before
| long and no selling at all resulted.

NEW YORK STOCK MARKET
New York. —Rails and oils divided hon
ors in today's extremely active stock
market, the turnover for the two hours
being on the basis of 2.000,000 shares sos
a full session.
The demand for rails differed from re
cent movements in that it centered very
largely in high grade or dividend paying
shares, although minor or reorganized Is
sues were A-ell to t lie fore.
Gross adances in Canadian Pacific,
Southern Pacific. Atchison and other
trans-continentals and grangers extend
ed from one to almost throe points, Read
ing and other coalers sharing moderately.
Royal Dutch issues featured the oils,
shares of the original company gaining
7% points and the local issue virtually
six points to the accompaniment of va
rious bull rumors.
The strength of Royal Dutch was the
more striking because of incessant pres
sure against Mexican Petroleum which
made but little recovery from its six
point reaction.
American Locomotive was strongest of
tbe equipments and United States Steel,
which made way in point of activity to
several other issues of less prominence
held all but a small fraction of it's %-
point advance.
Shipping, motors and metals were ir
recular. also suerfrs and tobaccos, but
Ohio Cities Gas responded to a cut in
the quarterly dividend with a net gain
of two points.
Despite the heavy trading of the week
clearing house banks reported another
moderate contraction of actual loans, but
the better part of last week’s gain in ex
cess reserves was lost.
Bonds especially railway issues were
firm. Total sales, par value, aggre
gated $6,655,000. Old U. S. bonds were
unchanged on call during the week.

fields of the west and southwest. Gains
in these comparatively obsure shares
ranged from three to almost 15 points,
with Texas and Pacific the main fea

The cut in the Bethlehem Steel com

general conditions if) the steel and metal
trades which has served as a check to
those issues.
Regardless of the heavy demands cre

being offered a slight reduction from re

Exchange on London strongthoned this
week, but francs were distinctly weaker
than at any time since Inception of the

There, was un active business on the
advance during the earlier part of the
week, which included buying by both for
eign and domestic trade Interest And a
broadening of speculative interest un a
bullish view of commodity values as a
general proposition and reports of con
tinued firmness in the goods market with
some of the |o<al brokers arguing that,
scarcity of textiles throughout the world
was beginning to make itself felt.
Profit-taking was'prmoted by less sat
isfactory news from Paris and reports of
b< iter progress in planting and new crop
preparation but otherwise brokers re
ported very little pressure against prices
and the market was influenced today to
tin* strength of near positions resulting
from the absence of more than three or
four May notices.
It Is reported that Belgium has es
tablished commercial credits in this
country amounting to $50,000,000 and
that a Belgian buying agent here Is al
ready placing orders for textiles and nia
chlnery. The removal of black lists and
otluV restrictions on shipments of com
modities to European neutrals is also
considered a fmor.tble feature from the
export standpoint and the conHnued fair
volume of business reported In Southern
spot markets hie be. n attributed vir
tually to n demand from abroad.
The weekly report of the weather bu
reau said that low lemvreraturcs had pre
vented germination and retarded growth
of cotton already up. but that conditions
had been favorable for farm work. Tem
peratures were considered more favorable
during the early part of the week Just
ended but tin* weather was cool again in
the eastern belt today.

Improvement and expan i u are the
key words us to ordinary distributive
trade both at wholesale and retail and

cheerful reports, but as heretofore the
big basic industries. Iron and steel ami
coal while displaying :i shade more life
in isolated Instances, arc running at slow
speed compared with the feverish activ

uncertainty still constitutes the apparent,
chief brake upon all operations. Winter
wheat crop prospects arc still highly flat

certainly as regards foods, text iles. Th«
