FABRIC BRiIAK IN CASING PINCHES
TUBES.
W. S. S. writes: Please explain the
cause of this trouble. One of my tires
went flat the other day and upon exam
ining the tube I found a slit in it. 1 put
m a new tube and ran the car a week,
when it deflated from a crack in this
tube. Using still another tube. I had the
same result. What is the matter with
these tubes? The casing is almost a
new one and seems perfect.
Answer: The casing may appear per
fect from the outside but. if you examine
it from the inside bending it quite ab
ruptly ut k intervals along its circumfer
ence. it is quite likely that you will find
a break in the fabric ot the wall which
may have been the result of a bruise
sustained by running over some! hard,
sharp object, at speed. If such a' fabric
break exists, your tubes presumably
have been cut by the pinching ration of
the sharp sides of the crack, between
which the tube enters when the tire is
in srvice. An inside blowout patch can
be fitted over the break as a temporary
measure to protect the tube, but a per
manent repair should be made or a blow
out will probably occur at this weak
spot.

RUBBER PRESERVATIVE PAINT.
T. W. F. asks: Does the commercially
advertised tire paint cause any injury to
tires?
w* tty
Answer: No. quite the reverse. A good
preservative compound of this kind acts
to fill small cuts and cracks in the tread
rubber and to delay their becoming larg
er and finally of sufficient size to admit
water and wirt, that will tend to loosen
the tread and cause sand blisters. At
least, these claims arc made for these
preparations and they appear reasonable.
HILLS TOO STEEP FOR GRAVITY
FULL SPEED.
A. P. J. writes: My Ford Sedan will
not. climb some of the steepest hills in
this city. After its stalling on one of
these. I disconnected the gasoline pipe
at tho carburetor and /ound that I had
to lower the detaclmu end three inches
below its point of connection before gas
oline would flow from it, although there
were nearly five gallons of fuel in tho
tank. How can I remove this difficulty?
Answer: The fuel flow on. these closed
cars fails. on sharp up grades, with a
larger amount of gasoline in tho tank,
than does that on the open models, be
cause the tank of the closed models is ot
a somewhat fiat form, while that of tho
open cars is cylindrical. Installing a va
cuum fuel feed system is the remedy for
your trouble and we aro quite sure that
Sony eof tho manufacturers of these de
vices can furnish you with such appa
ratus. with special fittings for mounting
tho tank. Some users have attached to
Ford fuel tanks, apparatus for creating
a temporary pressure feed, consisting of
a hand-opera tod air pump, delivering in
to the top of the tank, a gasket under
the filler cap to make H air tight and
meanß for venting the tank pressuro is
not being used. We recommend the va
cuum feed arrangement rather than this.
IDENTIFICATION OF HIS FIRING
CYLINDER.
T. W. F. asks: How can I tell which
cylinder of a Ford engine is missing ex
plosions?
Answer: Set the engine running at a
moderate speed and take a screwdriver
with a wooden handle and touch its
simultaneously to the metal top of
a spark-plug and the cylinder. This will
stop that plug from sparking. Do this to
each plug In turn and if, when it is tried
on a certain plug, the engine docs not
slow down, this plug has not been firing
properly. Another method is as follows:
Remove the coil-box cover and stop each
vibrator successively from operating, by
holding it down with the finger. A vi
brator. which ran be stopped without
causing the engine to lose speed, is fur
nishing current to a cylinder which is
missing explosions.
RENOVATED CASINOS.
M. S. asks: Is it profitable to have
two old casings sewed together to make
a new tire? There are parties that claim
great things for this process.
liEiJS
Answer: We doubt It, the following
being nome of the objections which we
have heard raised against the process:
The result is a very thick, stiff shoe and
one with too thick a wall, can hardly
bend adequately to absorb road irregu
larities without fabric breakage, which
shortly b ads to a blowout. Such a thick
stiff casing makes a car ride hard, heats
tp such an extent as to destroy the tube
prematurely and absorbs excessive pow
er. Being built up of fabric, presum
ably alreadv considerably deteriorated, it
has less strength than might be sup
posed. As this process is sometimes ear
ned out, the nutsidp fabric Is not par
ried to the head ana side wall blowouts—
vefy common with all casings—are likely
to occur very early.
IN STALING "SPOT LIGHT.
T. W. F. asks: How can I wire In a
spot light to be* operated from the Ford
magneto? Will its use reduce the driving
powet of the engine and the brilliancy
of the headlights?
Answer: On* of the bsck terminals of
tli* regular lighting switch Is connected
tllr«tct to the magneto. Krom this ttrrnl
mil. run a wire to one conn":lion of your
f.pot light switch and from the other spot
ight switch terminal to tin* connection

TIRE INFLATION QUERY.

fect produced upon tires, wheths- moist
or dry air Is used In Inhaling them?
Answer: Practically speaking, there
Is none.

this occurs, admission or exhaust, can
take place, a separate valve being pro
vided for tho intake and exhaust sides of
the engine. Another form is the rotary
valve. In one such construction, the
valve is in the form of a drum, which Is
rotated upon its axis by crank-shaft
driven mechanism, this drum being
guided in a gas-tight cylindrical space in
a valve chamber and its axis of rotation
being at right angles to the engine cyl
inder axis. A diametral port is cut
through the drum and, at thA proper pe
riod this port registers with correspond
ing ports in the cylinder wall and valve
pocket wall, permitting the entrance or
escape of gases. A separate valve is
used for intake ami for exhaust. You
will have to refer to files of the Official
Gazette of the Patent Office to obtain
patent dates.
TRACTORS IN FAR NORTH
Washington.—Caterpillar tractors soon
will establish a new record for use in
the far north.
Secretary Kcdflcld today reported that
four of these machines have been sent to
the Pribiloff Island, Alaska. They will
be used to pull trucks across the sandy
mesas of the island. Hedfield has sold
about 200,000 tons of bones, of which
great deposits have been discovered. The
bones make excellent fertilizer, Rodfiold
said, hut until the tractors arrive at the
islands no motive power has been avail
able to transport loaded trucks across

How Model 90 Broke the
High Gear Non-Stop Record
Could the strongest power plant ever built stand the
gruelling, searching punishment planned for the Over
land 90 stock model when it started on its 7 day staled
in high non-stop recently at Oklahoma City?
The first day’s performance was watched by the
public with eager interest —601 miles and not a sign of
let-down in the car’s perfect record. Then two days of
rain—whirling, drenching downpours, mud-clogged
roads, which tried the endurance of four relays of drivers.
Yet never a complaint from the sturdy Overland!
Four days more of pounding over country lanes
and thru blocked city streets —always in sealed high
gear —each day showing an average of 624 miles and an
average of 20.66 miles to the gallon of gasoline.
And then the amazing score at the finish. Not
once had the motor missed an explosion. Not even a
spark plug was changed. 4370 miles was the non-stop
high gear record by the Overland 90!
Among the 600,000 Overland owners, Model 90 has
long been known for its record of long life and eco
nomical service.
Let us show you an exact duplicate of this remark
able Model 90 car.
