CHIEF TAHAN TELLS GIRLS AND BOYS HOW
THUNDERBIRD MADE LIGTHNING AND STORMS
SLEEPTIME STORY HE HEARD IN HIS FATHER’S TEEPEE
WHEN THE KIOWAS ROAMED THE WEST.
By CHIEF TAHAN
of The Kiowa Indian Tribe.
qWhen I was a boy our mother* and
Itrandfatbers used to tell us Indian
children what they believ'd about
thunder storms and how they were
made.
Many times I have listened to the
story wlmn at ni(tbt a bright fire was
Ma/.iny In the, middle of the floor of
the teepee.
I will now tell you children the story,
so that you will know how Indians
used to think about It.
Wfell, there Is a great bird which
looks like an eagle, and he carries a
lake of water on his back.
Ills name In Thunderblrd.
And there Is a great big long Rat
tlennake.
He Is about as long as from ihc
place where the sun comes up to the
place in the sky over head when your
shadow is the shortest.
Thunderblrd does not like Rattle
snake, and he Is always trying to find
hlrn: for he wants to kill him and eat
him.
So, Thnnderbird Is always fJMng
around In the sky looking for Rattle
snake. Hot Rattlesnake he always
keeps his eyes wide open so that he
can Hrr him when he '»>mr*

to coll up. For a snake can never bite
very well until he makes his body look
like a pile of hoops.
So, Rattlesnake always sens Thun
derbird coming, and h. *ects ready for
him
When Thunderblrd gets close enough,
h» Just draws hack his head, and as
he strikes at him he opens his mouth
and tries to stab TbunderMlfl with Ills
long hooked teeth which are covered
with poison.
Rut Thunderblrd he dodges sway and
comes hack at him again. Sometimes

Thunderblrd. be Just grabs, nnd
grabs at Rattlesnake with his lons
sharp claws, and he pecks, and peck*
at him with Ills big beak.
But Rallesnake he dodges tits hear),
and he twists sround. and rims nnd

end of his tall, and he strikes hack,
and strikes buck. And Tliunderblrri, he
dodges his head, and dodges around tilt
the sky Jtets black with his shadow;
nnd he makes an awful noise with his
wings, he flaps them so fast.
Thnt Is how he makes the thunder.
Thunderblrd gets so mad at Rattle
