Local Dealer After Trip to Factory Gives Graphic Description
of Chalmers From Time It Enters Foundry as Pig Iron to
Its Completion.

beginning for one of the world’s greatest

Hunky laborer* pile the iron onto amah
trucks which ascend the long incline to
Hu* cupalo room. In this room the metal
Is weighed and the huge blast furnace*
are charged by experts. The Chalmers
cupalos are some of the lanrest In Detroit.
A bed of '-oke ts first built up and the
metal added on top. A blast of compress
ed air 1h shot through the mass, forcing
the heat to about 2.H00 degrees fahrenhelt.
For half an hour this intensive heat plays
upon the iron before It Is ready to pour.
Down below on the foundry floor the
men prepare themselves 'or the handling
of the molten fire. Leather shin guards,
leather gloves and goggles are adjusted.
When all is ready the great electric crane
swings a ladle before the month of the
furnace and the clay s'opper is removed.

the molds
Hut here another element enters into
the casting of the cylinder block. Not
only must a man or woman have steady
nerves to handle the sand forms without
Injuring them hut the Job also requires
the service of a food baker. After the
damp sand has been molded it is placed
in huge ovens and baked hard. This is
necessary so that it' can resist the action
of the molten metal when it is uoured in
to the final cores.
The larger section of the cylinder block
and crank case are formed in what Is
('ailed the Hamming Room. Rlaok loam
sand Is use- for the big cores as it is
more porus and allows the gases of the
hot metal to pass off The forms are
filled and then jarred’ into shape by the
rammers, which sound like a battery of
trip hammers. These moulds are also
lmken. then assempled. When all of the

At the New York Twentieth National
Automobile Show tne passenger car and
motor truck divisions of the display will
be held simultaneously during the week
of January 3-10, the passenger ears and
accessories being displayed on four floors
of the Grand tVntral Palace, and the
trucks, including trailers, bodies, parts
and accessories, in the Kighth Foast Ar
tillery Armory, Joronu* avenue and
Kingshrldgc road and Hundred and
Ninety-fourth street.
More than 83 makes of passenger cars
will be on exhibit 67 makes of motor
trucks and 284 accessories S A Miles,
manager of the National Automobile
Shows, states that this is the largest
number of exhibitors and the most com
plete exposition of the industry of the
shows.
For the first time it is possible to
show complete lines of motor trucks
without crowding. The floor of the
Fighth Coast Armory Is 800 by 60 feet,
unobstructed by posts, and the building
Is believed to be the largest of its kind
In the world. The roof, which is 110
feet high, is supported by 16 steel gtrd-

After the moulds have cooled suffi
ciently they are aken to the cleaning
room. Here the sand is knocked away
and the case is placed in a huge revolving
cleaning machine. Overgrown jacks and
rough pieces of inotal are thrown in, the
cover closed, and as the machine whils
about a stream of air is shot through.
From this crude laundry the crank case
onto a conveyer arid passes through the
hands of several workmen who chip and
grind away the rough portions on its sur
face. The last cleaning it gets is a sand
banth A blast of sand is shot by com
pressed air over its entire surface which
gives It the final smoothness. The opera
tor wTth his turbaned head look like an
Arab Chief riding out on a Sahara sand
storm.
Conveyers again hurry the part to the
machine shoo where it receives the first
rough attention. Multiple and gang
drills each have their turn in the progres
sive Bystern cf the shop, at completing
the Job. A special machine bores out
each of the six cylinders at once, thereby
Riving an immense amount of Pmo By
the time it has made the circuit of tho
various machines in this shop the cylin
der block or crank case is ready for the
motor assembly floor of the main Chal
mers plant. After jeaving this machine
shop it quickly tikes on the appearance
of a finished product and is in a shor’
while one of the component parts of a
finished Chalmers ear.

tion from the time the iron is thrown into
