NAVY SHELL PIERCES
14-INCH PLATE ARMOR
Washington —On the heels of news
rnat the navv department had success
ruily directed the movement Of an 11-000-
ton battltsiilp by radio, it was learned
T u €eday that the department had per
.♦ctad a 16-inch shell which pierces 14-
inch p*ate armor at an angle of ten de
grees.
The tests were held at Indian Head.
.Mfrsa* It wa3 txp’afVied that there has
never been any difficulty in an • armor
plJfCing shell entering the side of a ship
when tk line of impact is nearly per*
pendicular to the side of the vessel. At
►-ven small angles of incidence the b*>-
shell Is apt to b 3 turned aside without
penetration. TDp feat now performed
was made possible by the invention of
an explosive of tremendous and new en
ergy and by special constructions of s he
head of the shell. Four shots were fired
in the tests and all entered with the de
sired energy, although the line of fire
was an angle of ten degrees. This will
give the United States navy an immense
advantage in actual conflict as long as
the navy can keep the secret.

SIO.OO PER WEEK PAID
WHILE YOU LEARN
A number of high-grade
young women having had no
previous business experience
of any kind are now given an

quired by growth and im
provements.
Ten dollars per week are
paid when you enter the

Women who enter tele
phone work are not limited
to the actual work of operat
ing at the switchboard. One
out of every six young wo
men in telephone service oc
cupies a supervisory position
and in Augusta the salaries
of such positions are from
$65.00 per month up.
Those who are ambitious
and display energy and abil

positions paying salaries of
SIOO.OO per month and

Annual vacations are
given with full pay and
there is protection from fin
ancial loss in case of sick
ness.
Women of superior educa
tion need not hesitate about
entering telephone work.
Their advancement and re
muneration will be measur
ed by their ability, as is at
tested by the many college
women now in Bell Tele
phone service.
The conditions under
which telephone work is
done are ideal. The operat
ing rooms are clean, well
ventilated, well lighted, and
well heated. The recrea
tion room is attractive and
comfortable. The dining
room is a bright spot of
cleanliness and cheerfulness.
The lunches are of the best,
daintily served, and at ac
tual wholesale cost of the
food alone.
Well known and experi
enced women act as matrons
and devote their effort to
ward safeguarding the
health and comfort of the
young women.
