Science and Eugenics Will
Triumph at Last, Says Dean

collapse of Great Britain.)
London.. .The members of the eugenics

Initiating a crusade against the real
causes of half the ills that afflict man

as unpractical cranks who wish to in

of believing what they want to believe.
That the intellect, as such, should be
spoken of with contempt is a new thing:
it indicates that barbarization of public
and social life. The vogue of irrationai
ists and emotionalists like Gilbert Chest
erton, shows that what our reading
public likes. The whole British nation,
and especially its Government, is be
having as it we had come into a huge
fortune by the war. We vote and spent
money in utter recklessness, /md the few
articulate protests are not attended to.
The mind of the average man, called
by psychologists to the “group mind" is
really an undisciplined unsifted bundle

A Medford, Oklahoma man, among thousands who
of emotions and prejudices, gathering
by preference round a sentiment father
than an idea. The slums are the chief
breeding ground of undersiable citizens.
Since their inhabitants cannot be got
rid of, it :s better that attempts should
be made to raise them to a position oi
self respect in which they would pro
bably not breed so fast It is usually
only in the lower strata that the worst
specimens get married. In the higher
ranks a throughly degenerate stock tends
to die out, unless there is great beauty
or wealth, or a little to act as a make
weight.
Organized religion is nothing more than
a creaking weather-cock. Nineteenth
century England was a going concern;
post-war England is a gone concern.
The goose that laid the golden eggs is
having h'.s throat cut.
There must before long be a thinly
disguised repudiation of the scraps of
paper on which the nation’s debts ot
honor are inscribed. This will mean the
disappearance of the tax-paying class.
Thence forward the masses will have to
tax themselves. The country will be
very poor and to a large extent bar
barized: but sentimentalism, the great
enemy of science and eugenics, will bo
at a discount. Wastefulness will come
to and end because ?%?re w'ill be nothing
to waste.
When the working man has to sup
port feeble-minded schools, hospitals for
incurables, and the like, he will realize
it is to his interest to apply the scred
trade union principle of limitation of
output to his neighbors piocreative
activities especially if the output be of a
thoroughly bad* quality.
lam afraid many oif the best families
will inevitably disappear from the face
of the earth. In thousands of proffess
ional class households the tradition oi
culture and refined living will be main
tained at the heavy price of family
suicide.
Thinks Villa Seeks Chance
to Go Into Mexic Politics
Dy L. P. Kirby
Universal Service Staff Correspondent.
Mexico City.—Francisco Villa, retired
guerilla chieftain, is believed to have
some political plan in connection with
his frequent trips away from his haci
ondo, Canutillo, in Duran jfb. It is
thought that, ho dreams of holding high
office in Mexico or is desirirous of main
taining his popularity and prestige a
mong his former followers, so as to re
main powerful and formidable in the
northern states, in case of any sort of
crisis. m
. His latest trip was to Santa Rosalia
Camargo, in the state of Chihuahua.
His progress from his estate in the
State of Durange was again that of a
fuedal lord. He was accompanied, as
usual by a body-guard and was greeted
with enthusiasms on his way.
At Santa Rosalia, there was banquets,
balls and serenades. Every thing was
done to convince Villa of his boundless
popularity in the town. While It is hint
ed that some residents of Santa Rosalia
may have joined in the festivities with
apparent enthusiasm as a matter of pol
icy, fearing that Villa might again be
come a bandit-rebel and attack the town,
it is generally admitted that the demon
stration at Santa Rosalia and elsewhere
leaves no doubt that Villa has a strong
hold, despite Ills years of pillage, upon
the popular imagination.
